Week 11 Waiver Wire: Tim Tebow and Fool's Gold to Avoid

John FrielNov 15, 2011

We've come to that point in the fantasy football season where the postseason is right around the corner. You need your top performers at their peak potential. If you're on the lookout for a new player to bring in to possibly strengthen a position, we're going to give you a few players that you're going to need to avoid even though they have been performing well over the past few weeks.

Don't blow it in your fantasy league after coming this far by making sure to avoid these key players that you might have had as a possible option to join your team off waivers.

Tim Tebow, QB, Denver Broncos

He's 3-1 in his first four starts as the Denver Broncos newest quarterback, and he's beginning to convert atheists into believers. Tim Tebow may have been relentlessly criticized since his days as the star quarterback at the University of Florida, and it has transitioned to the NFL with an even greater following.

Tebow may have brought the Broncos momentary success, but picking him up as your starting quarterback would be a tremendously asinine move. He will get you absolutely no positive results when it comes to the passing game, as he has only thrown the ball for 526 yards over four games with six touchdowns.

Take note of the Broncos upcoming schedule as well. Tebow may have been able to beat Miami, Kansas City and Oakland, but I don't think he's going to have much success running that option offense against the likes of the New York Jets or Chicago Bears.

There's no point to having a quarterback that plays like a running back since the chances are high that you could either depend on the two you already have or pick up someone that is actually listed at running back from the waivers.

Chris Johnson, RB, Tennessee Titans

The chances are moderately high that Chris Johnson may have already been dropped in your league due to the extremely slow start he got off to. Those 130 yards he had against an awful Carolina Panthers defense were nice for a change, but I wouldn't get too accustomed to seeing Johnson put up stats like this based on his track record.

After leading the league in rushing the previous season, Johnson has only rushed for 496 yards, 55 per game, and a measly two touchdowns over the course of nine games. It's unbelievable to see a player that appeared so talented last season to falter this greatly in the span of a year, but Johnson has managed to make many fantasy owners look silly.

In case you're a disgruntled owner that took Johnson in the top five of your fantasy draft and is now considering picking him up again, just keep staying away because you're doing the right thing.

Anthony Fasano, TE, Miami Dolphins

A wildly inconsistent tight end that will replace his gloves with butter from time to time, Anthony Fasano is coming off of an excellent game against the Washington Redskins where he made a couple of key catches on his way to three receptions and 60 yards.

As badly as the Miami Dolphins need to target tight ends, they simply don't and would rather run the ball with Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas or throw it out to Brandon Marshall or Davone Bess before they get it to Fasano. In nine games this season, Fasano has 15 catches all year, which is good enough for 250 yards and three touchdowns.

Many owners this year are hurting because of the loss of Dallas Clark, but please make sure to avoid Fasano as your next starting tight end unless you want below five points every game from an X-factor position.

Mike Williams, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

You would think as one of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers top receivers being paired up with a gunslinger like Josh Freeman that you would see some positive results. Alas, it's not the case for Mike Williams, who has underperformed all year long and is now giving more reason as to why he should be dropped.

Williams isn't going to break out of this slump, especially with the way things are going in Tampa Bay at the moment. In nine games this season, Williams has yet to catch more than six receptions in a game and only has recorded 406 yards and a touchdown all year long.

A tremendous disappointment after recording 11 touchdowns the previous season, Williams needs to be dropped for a solid player that will go out and get you some points rather than leaving you hoping that he'll come through.

Miami Dolphins defense

This shouldn't have to be said, but please don't go picking up the Miami Dolphins less-than-stellar defense. They've surrendered only 12 points in the past two games to the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins, haven't given up a touchdown and actually picked two interceptions off last game for the first time all year.

The Dolphins may seem to be getting it on track, but take a look at their schedule and what high-powered offenses they will be facing. Buffalo, Philadelphia, Dallas, New England and the New York Jets all take on the Dolphins, and the 'Fins are giving reason to not pick up their defense when you see that they gave up a combined 62 points just between the Patriots and Jets earlier in the season.

This may seem obvious to some, but that Dolphins defense isn't worth picking up when seeing that there are plenty of teams with weaker schedules against offensively challenged teams that could be picked up instead.

Deion Branch, WR, New England Patriots

Don't be so hasty when picking up Deion Branch after his first quality game three weeks because I'm not buying it. Branch had five catches for 58 yards in a Patriots win over the New York Jets, but this is coming after two games with a combined five receptions.

All year long, Branch has been all over the place with borderline amazing games as seen in Week 2, when he caught eight passes for 129 yards against the San Diego Chargers, and recently in Week 9, when he only recorded two passes for 21 yards against the New York Giants.

With Tom Brady usually targeting Wes Welker and Branch being so inconsistent over the course of the season in terms of looks and receptions, I would trust myself getting a solid wide receiver that will get you at least a certain five catches per before going all in on a player who might get you 10 catches one week and then two the next.

Dwayne Bowe, WR, Kansas City Chiefs

A terrific wide receiver that is coming off a monumental 2010-'11 season where he recorded 15 touchdowns, Dwayne Bowe may have to be replaced by a more capable receiver next week and over the next few as well after word is now coming in that his quarterback in Matt Cassel may be out for the season.

That means Tyler Palko will now be taking snaps for the Chiefs, and that's something I wouldn't trust any day of the week.

Bowe only has five touchdowns and 663 yards through nine games and those numbers aren't going to improve any time soon with Palko now tossing the ball around.
