Pacquiao vs. Mayweather: Bob Arum Says Not at This Time to Mega-Fight

Mick AkersNov 15, 2011

The majority of boxing fans immediately thought that since Manny Pacuqiao was awarded a win over Juan Manuel Marquez for the second time, that he would next lace his gloves up to get in the ring with fellow welterweight great Floyd Mayweather. Well according to Golden Boy Productions CEO Shaefer, Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum said no to the fight taking place in the near future.

"

"We have been informed that Bob Arum is not interested in pursuing a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao at this time," Schaefer said.

Shaefer wasn't done there he went on to say:

"

"The truth of the matter is that we received this afternoon an email from retired federal judge Daniel Weinstein, who has informed us that Top Rank is pursuing a rematch with Marquez and, therefore, is not interested in immediate talks for a possible Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. This is obviously as clear as it can be that they have no intentions of making a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. Therefore, Floyd Mayweather will have no other choice than to move on and identify and lock in another opponent for his ring return on May 5."

If this news in indeed true, it would have to rank as one of the worst business decisions in the history of sports.

The difference between the two fights are night-and-day. There is a smell demographic of fans who want to see a fourth fight between the rivals Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, but the whole world would tune into the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, as it is guaranteed to smash all precious gate and Pay-Per-View records.

Let's just say that the fourth fight between Pacquiao and Marquez garners around 1.25 million PPV buys, sure that's a nice number, but the number of PPV buyers would almost double, as the mega fight is predicted to break the two million buy mark, making it a record PPV draw.

No matter how you cut it, everyone involved with Pacquiao and Mayweather's camps will make significantly more money if the mega fight is signed. It would give boxing a moment to once again shine, instead of another black eye.
