Should Salary Caps Be Brought Into Football?

R LDec 17, 2008

Money may not always be able to buy happiness, but it's a good starting point in some cases.

Premier League Chairman Richard Scudamore and UEFA President Michel Platini are  supposedely backing the idea of a salary cap in football.

In my opinion, another way to possibly level the playing field is limiting the import of foreign players into squads.

More and more investors are coming in hoping to use their cash rather than intelligence of the game.

The obvious example is in Manchester City where Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan, status ruler of Abu Dhabi and President of the United Arab Emirates, took over Manchester City and signed Robinho for £32 million.

City have been apparently interested in over 50 of the world's top footballers over the past few months. David Villa alone has been connected to a £60 million offer.

Sheikh Khalifa has a personal fortune of $23 billion, and it is suggested that the Al Nahyan family have access to $1 trillion. It's a simple challenge to make a strong group of players when you have unlimited resources.

A good solution would seem to be a salary cap, and a set maximum on transferred players. Just imagine if no EPL club could spend more than £50 million in a season.

Well, the Citizens would have Robinho, and a remainder of cap space leaving them in hopes that more players compete for free as Athletic Bilbao legend Joseba Etxeberria is doing in his final season with the Spanish club.

Salary caps would bring the question of whether to sign a big star, or a group of less talented players to even it out.

Managers would have to make due with a certain number of players, and keep an eye on their spending sprees. Money isn't everything, or at least it shouldn't be in the game of football.

These solutions would bring more passion to the game, and limit the amount of rich foreigners with no real interest, who manage teams with their cheque-books.
