Wayne Rooney: Ranking the 11 Worst Moments of Rooney's Career

Michael CummingsNov 14, 2011

With Wayne Rooney, crazy is just part of the package.

Sure, Rooney's had his share of great moments. But then there are the crazy moments, too.

You know the ones we're talking about.

The red card against Portugal (yeah, that's gonna be No. 1). The swearing—at the camera, his teammates, opposing fans and his own fans. The tackles. More red cards.

If all the incidents weren't so dang entertaining, they'd be kinda sad. For all that talent, Rooney can't seem to hold it together.

We're not trying to make fun of him, and we sure don't want to wind him up (you'll see why later).

Consider this a celebration of the crazy in Wayne Rooney's life.

Honorable Mention: Rio Punks Rooney

1 of 12

This video absolutely slays us.

Just watch it.

Doctor: "Wayne, just keep holding that, yeah?"

Wayne, holding IV bag: "I'm going to kill you."

Well, that's what he was thinking.

The rest of these won't be so light-hearted…

11. Rooney Rages Against Beckham

2 of 12

In September 2005, England lost 1-0 to Northern Ireland in a qualifier for World Cup 2006.

Late in the first half, Rooney became frustrated after suffering several fouls at the hands of Northern Ireland's players.

He lost his cool, got booked (meaning he missed England's next match) and quickly started arguing with captain David Beckham, who was trying to calm down the teenage striker.

He also brushed off Rio Ferdinand's attempt to calm him down and continued his tantrum in the locker room.

Looking back on it now, we can tell this incident served as a sign of what was to come.

10. Rooney Applauds the Ref

3 of 12

In a Champions League match against Villarreal in September 2008, Rooney earned a booking for a foul on Quique Alvarez.

To show his appreciation for referee Kim Milton Neilson, Rooney applauded sarcastically.

That earned him a second yellow and a pointless red card.

Afterwards, Rooney claimed his days of mischief were over.

9. Rooney Takes It out on His Shoes

4 of 12

Just before the Cristiano Ronaldo incident, England played Sweden in the group stages of the 2006 World Cup.

Rooney, who had recently returned from a foot injury, was subbed off in the second half.

He didn't like it.

To show his displeasure, Rooney took off his shoes and slammed them against the ground.

That earned him a rebuke from teammate Gary Neville.

8. Rooney Rankles Sven

5 of 12

A young Rooney was up to his normal tricks in a match against Spain in November 2004.

England manager Sven-Göran Eriksson criticized Rooney in front of his teammates at halftime after some persistent fouling in the first half.

But that's not what really angered the Swede.

When Eriksson subbed Rooney out, Rooney swore at the England bench and tore off the black armband that England's players were wearing to honor the recently deceased Emlyn Hughes and Keith Weller.

Rooney also refused to acknowledge his replacement, Alan Smith.

Here's what Eriksson said afterwards.

"

I did not like what I saw and it is bad for England. Even if you do not agree to being substituted, you have to accept it if you are a professional. I had to calm the team down at halftime, telling them to be aggressive without being stupid. Rooney will behave himself in future. I'm not worried about that.

"

Maybe he should have been.

7. Rooney Blasts England Fans

6 of 12

England played Algeria to a dour 0-0 draw in the group stages of the 2010 World Cup.

After the match, English fans booed their team off the pitch.

Rooney, of course, decided that retaliation in kind was apropos.

"Nice to see your home fans boo you. That's loyal supporters," he said to a nearby camera.

Shockingly, fans didn't take too well to that.

Rooney later apologized.

6. Rooney Riles Up Turkish Fans

7 of 12

In 2009, Rooney nearly got himself in serious trouble during Manchester United's match against Besiktas.

He was replaced by Michael Owen in the second half, and once again, he was dissatisfied.

Rooney slammed his shoes, again, and started arguing with the home team's fans.

Here's a video of the incident.

So, just to be clear: Riling up Turkish fans might not be a great idea, Wayne.

5. Rooney Punches the Corner Flag

8 of 12

This might be one of Rooney's funniest moments.

First, he got sent off for throwing a ball during a game against Fulham in 2009.

Then he punched the corner flag.

So, it wasn't all that bad in terms of actual depravity. But to lose your cool like that is inexcusable.

It earned Rooney the label "crazy man" from England boss Fabio Capello.

4. Rooney's Potty Mouth

9 of 12

Wayne Rooney was really excited about scoring a hat trick against West Ham United in the spring of 2011.

So he decided to cuss out the camera. A live TV camera.

The FA didn't like that so much. They banned him from Manchester United's FA Cup semifinal against Manchester City.

United lost.

3. Allegations of Infidelity

10 of 12

In 2010, the English media came out with reports of Wayne Rooney cheating on his wife, Coleen, with a prostitute.

Coleen was pregnant at the time.

Earlier this year, more allegations came out.

2. The Montenegro Incident

11 of 12

Rooney got himself sent off during England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro in October.

The red card earned him a three-match ban, which Rooney is appealing.

If the appeal fails, Rooney will miss all three of England's group matches at next summer's tournament.

All because he couldn't hold his temper.

1. The Ronaldo Incident

12 of 12

You know what happened.

Rooney got himself sent off for a stomp on Ricardo Carvalho in England's quarterfinal match against Portugal in the 2006 World Cup.

The incident was compounded by the histrionics of Cristiano Ronaldo, who was then Rooney's teammate at Manchester United.

Ronaldo did a great job of getting Rooney riled up. He may or may not have influenced the referee, but Rooney clearly deserved the red card.

Rooney, for his part, did a poor job of controlling his emotions in a big match.

Ronaldo was later cleared of any wrongdoing.

Portugal won the match, of course.
