BCS Rankings Week 12: National Championship Picture Won't Change for Now
If you're one of the many college football fans across the country who's having trouble keeping up with the ever-changing BCS National Championship race, never fear—you'll have an extra week to get used to the way things look.
Just about every team at the top of the BCS rankings, including the top tandem of LSU and Oklahoma State, has a "gimme" game to get through in Week 12.
In fact, the disparity between the good and the bad is so huge this week, we might as well refer to the crop collectively as "One-Percent Saturday," for all you Occupy enthusiasts out there.
Starting at the top, the Tigers have a trip to Oxford, Miss. on tap to face Ole Miss. The Rebels have won just two of their eight games this season, with nary a single victory in SEC play, and have already forced head coach Houston Nutt into an official resignation at season's end.
The second-ranked Cowboys, coming off a devilish 66-6 shellacking of Texas Tech, need only walk over an Iowa State squad that managed just 13 points against Kansas' NCAA-worst defense this past Saturday. This could be something of a trap game for the Pokes, as it stands as their last game before the Bedlam Game with Oklahoma to decide the Big 12.
But, so long as Brandon Weeden is still playing pitch-and-catch with Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma State should be, well, a-okay.
No. 3 Alabama, fresh off a 24-7 slamming of Mississippi State, will enjoy a lovely respite from the rigors of the SEC when it welcomes Georgia Southern, an FCS school from the Southern Conference, to Tuscaloosa. You want "Game of the Century"? This could be the "Whoopin' of the Century".
Or the "Upset of the Century", if the Eagles stem the Crimson Tide.
Oregon, ranked fourth in the latest BCS poll, has the toughest test of any title contender, as they will welcome an 8-2 USC team to Eugene on Saturday. Of course, the Ducks destroyed a strong Stanford squad on Saturday and have demolished the Trojans in each of their last two meetings by an average of 24 points per contest.
Something tells me Darron Thomas, LaMichael James and the rest of their speedy teammates won't be looking past Tommy Trojan to the season-ending Civil War against 2-8 Oregon State.
No. 5 Oklahoma's cakewalk in Week 12 could be a bit tricky against No. 22 Baylor, especially with Ryan Broyles sidelined by a torn ACL for the rest of the season. Then again, it's not as though the Bears' defense, which surrenders 36 points per game, has provided much resistance so far.
And to wrap it up, because Clemson, Virginia Tech and Stanford aren't quite in the chase for the crystal football, there's sixth-ranked Arkansas, which will welcome to Fayetteville a disappointing Mississippi State squad whose best win of the season came against Louisiana Tech.
So there you have it, folks. If the top six teams in the BCS rankings stack up any differently come this time next week, I'll be just as surprised as anyone of you, if not more so.
