2012 MLB Free Agency: Top Free Agent Each Team May Lose, Possible Replacements

Joel ReuterNov 13, 2011

The offseason is here, and that means daily free agent rumors as the chips begin to fall on where some of the top unsigned talent will be playing next season.

However, just as important as deciding what players to add to the roster is planning ahead for the loss of a teams own free agents. Whether it's adding a player from the open market or handing the job to a developing young player, planning ahead for potential departures is key to any offseason's success.

So here is a look at the top player each team stands to lose this offseason and then their options for replacement on both the free agent market and within their own organizations.

Arizona Diamondbacks: 2B Aaron Hill

1 of 30

Overview

The Diamondbacks made a move at the deadline, swapping underperforming second baseman with the Blue Jays when they sent Kelly Johnson north of the border for Aaron Hill. Hill upped his production and hit .315 in 33 games with Arizona but his $8 million option was declined.

Free Agent Options

Hill and Johnson are probably the two best options on a market that also includes low-cost starting options in Ramon Santiago, Mark Ellis and Jamey Carroll.

Internal Options

The Diamondbacks are short on infield talent in their system, and Tony Abreu would be the only real option. He hit .292 BA, 10 HR, 72 RBI, 12 SB last season at Triple-A, but is already 26 and has not shown much in 146 big league games.

Atlanta Braves: SS Alex Gonzalez

2 of 30

Overview

The Braves only real hole for the upcoming season comes in the potential departure of shortstop Alex Gonzalez. While he hit just .241 last season, he posted a 1.1 dWAR and with 15 home runs, he provided at least passable power for the bottom of the lineup.

Free Agent Options

The prize of the market at shortstop is no doubt Jose Reyes, but it seems unlikely he will end up in Atlanta. Bringing back Gonzalez on a one-year deal seems like the most likely option, but Clint Barmes or former Braves Edgar Renteria and Rafael Furcal could also serve as stopgap options.

Internal Options

The Braves have their shortstop of the future in 21-year-old Tyler Pastornicky, who impressed last season between Double-A and Triple-A as he hit .314 BA, 7 HR, 45 RBI, 27 RBI. However, another year of seasoning with a stopgap veteran may be the best course of action in Atlanta.

Baltimore Orioles: DH Vladimir Guerrero

3 of 30

Overview

The Orioles are only set to lose two free agents this offseason, with DH Vladimir Guerrero and backup infielder Cesar Izturis hitting the market. Guerrero fells well short of matching his 2010 numbers with the Rangers and will likely be headed for a major pay-cut or retirement this offseason.

Free Agent Options

Signing a DH is always a risky proposition, as the Orioles learned when they gave Guerrero $8 million last season for a 0.1 WAR season. Veterans like Hideki Matsui or Jorge Posada may come cheap but likely won't be worth it.

Internal Options

Luke Scott makes the most sense as the next starting DH, with Nolan Reimold stepping into an everyday role in left field, but he could very well be non-tendered. If that's the case, expect 24-year-old Josh Bell to get the first crack at the job as he has shown good power in the minors with 52 HR in the past three seasons.

Boston Red Sox: DH David Ortiz

4 of 30

Overview

Two years ago, it looked as though the impressive career of David Ortiz was coming to an end. However, he has hit .290 BA, 61 HR, 198 RBI over the past two seasons and the 35-year-old still has plenty left. That said, he will likely expect to make close to the $12.5 million he made last season.

Free Agent Options

If the Red Sox don't bring back Ortiz, it will be because they feel safe handing the job over to one of their talented young hitters. Don't expect the team to add anyone other than Ortiz from the market.

Internal Options

The Red Sox have an impressive young hitter in 23-year-old Ryan Lavarnway (.290 BA, 32 HR, 93 RBI) who will likely serve as the backup catcher next season, but the team could get him consistent at bats if they let Ortiz walk and plug him in as the DH.

Chicago Cubs: 3B Aramis Ramirez

5 of 30

Overview

The Cubs are heading into a transition period, and will likely be without third baseman Aramis Ramirez who declined his mutual option and has decided to test the market. As the best third baseman on the market, expect teams like the Tigers and Angels to push hard for his services.

Free Agent Options

Beyond Ramirez, the free agent class at third base is incredibly thin with mediocre options such as Wilson Betemit, Casey Blake and Eric Chavez unlikely to be of any interest to the Cubs.

Internal Options

If Ramirez does indeed sign elsewhere, which seems likely, the Cubs could decide to give former No. 2 overall pick Josh Vitters a chance at a starting gig after he hit .283 BA, 14 HR, 81 RBI last season at Double-A. If they deem him unready, utility man D.J. LeMahieu may be next in line for the job.

Chicago White Sox: SP Mark Buehrle

6 of 30

Overview

The White Sox entered the 2011 season with an abundance of starting pitching and even used a six-man rotation at times last season. However, they dealt Edwin Jackson to the Cardinals at the deadline and will now have to compete to retain the services of 12-year veteran Mark Buehrle.

Free Agent Options

The starting pitching market is fairly thin this season beyond the top tier guys, and the White Sox likely will not have the money to pursue someone like C.J. Wilson. Low-cost veterans like Bruce Chen, Freddy Garcia or Erik Bedard could be options, though.

Internal Options

The time may be now for the White Sox to move 22-year-old flame thrower Chris Sale to the rotation, as the 6'6" left-hander was originally drafted to be the White Sox future ace. Expect him to be stretched out this spring and given a shot at the rotation, even if Buehrle is brought back.

Cincinnati Reds: CP Francisco Cordero

7 of 30

Overview

The Reds signed Francisco Cordero to a four-year, $45 million deal prior to the 2008 season and he saved 150 games with a 2.96 ERA in his time with the team. They declined a $12 million option for this coming season on the 36-year-old though, and he will hit the open market.

Free Agent Options

There are a number of closer options on the market this season, and Ryan Madson could make the most sense for the Reds. With the signing of Jonathan Papelbon, he likely will not be back in Philadelphia and should come cheaper than some of the other top arms.

Internal Options

The Reds could decide to stretch Aroldis Chapman out this spring and give him a chance at the rotation, but if he returns to the bullpen, he certainly has closer stuff. Nick Masset also throws gas, and has been the team's primary setup man the past three seasons, so he could be next in line.

Cleveland Indians: CF Grady Sizemore

8 of 30

Overview

After three straight injury-plagued seasons, Grady Sizemore is finally hitting the open market, and the 28-year-old represents one of the best low-risk, high-reward options on the market. With LF Michael Brantley and RF Shin-Soo Choo, the Indians have the corner sports in place.

Free Agent Options

The free agent market market on center fielders is thin and unimpressive with Nate McLouth, Rick Ankiel and Coco Crisp representing the best options. Crisp could make sense, as the team lacks a true lead off hitter.

Internal Options

Ezequiel Carrera made his big league debut last season, and the 24-year-old showed solid speed (10 SB, 49 hits) if nothing else. Tyler Holt could be the future in center field, but he is at least a couple years away so look for the team to sign a veteran or see what Carrera can do.

Colorado Rockies: SP Aaron Cook

9 of 30

Overview

After 10 seasons with the Rockies, Aaron Cook will be hitting the open for the first time in his career. He is the Rockies all-time wins leader with 72 victories, but is coming off of a season in which he went 3-10 with a 6.03 ERA.

Free Agent Options

After dealing Ubaldo Jimenez, the Rockies have no true ace of their staff so they could make a play at some of the bigger names on the market. More likely than not, they will be more focused on addressing their needs at second base and third base.

Internal Options

The Rockies have a good, young core of starting pitchers in Jhoulys Chacin, Jason Hammel, Esmil Rogers, Juan Nicasio as well as the pair they received for Jimenez from the Indians in Alex White and Drew Pomeranz. The team has enough players already on the roster to go without signing a replacement for Cook.

Detroit Tigers: 3B Wilson Betemit

10 of 30

Overview

The Tigers are a team that got old very quickly, as Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Guillen and Brandon Inge all dropped off very quickly. The team traded with the Royals to acquire Wilson Betemit as a third base upgrade but he is now set to hit free agency.

Free Agent Options

Aramis Ramirez is undoubtedly the class of the free agent market at third base, and will be pursued hard by both the Tigers and Angels among other teams. Beyond him, there is not much to work with and if the Tigers lose out they may consider bringing Betemit back on a one-year deal.

Internal Options

The Tigers have their third baseman of the future in Nick Castellanos, a first-round selection in 2010. He impressed last year in his first full pro season with a line of .312 BA, 7 HR, 76 RBI. However, that was at Single-A and he is still only 19 years old, so expect the team to find a veteran stopgap.

Miami Marlins: SP Javier Vazquez

11 of 30

Overview

Following a poor final season with the Yankees, Javier Vazquez signed a one-year, $7 million deal with the Marlins as he attempted to find success once again in the National League. Despite the Marlins struggling, he had a solid season with 13 wins and a 3.69 ERA and he should see plenty of interest on the free agent market.

Free Agent Options

The Marlins are set to move into their new stadium and have already made headlines by talking with some of the markets top free agents. Mark Buehrle was among that group, and the team may also kick the tires on C.J. Wilson, but in the end it seems more likely that the team spends on offense with a solid core of pitching already in place.

Internal Options

The Marlins will return a rotation of Josh Johnson, Ricky Nolasco and Anibal Sanchez for sure in 2012 and have Chris Volstad and Brad Hand also coming back so they could conceivably get by without signing anyone. As far as up and coming prospects, most of their impact pitching is still in the lower levels.

Houston Astros: SS Clint Barmes

12 of 30

Overview

The Astros more or less cleaned house last season, leaving them with only two free agents in Clint Barmes and outfielder Jason Michaels. While neither factor into the Astros future plans, Barmes quietly had a solid season with a 2.9 WAR and he will garner interest from a number of teams for his versatility alone.

Free Agent Options

The Astros have no business signing any free agents this offseason. They are more than a couple years from being competitive again and they need to commit to rebuilding entirely and assemble their lineup from within.

Internal Options

Angel Sanchez looks to be the shortstop of the present, as the 27-year-old played in 110 games last season and hit .240 as the team's utility infielder. He could at least bridge the gap for the league minimum while Jonathan Villar, who was acquired for Roy Oswalt, continues to progress as the shortstop of the future.

Kansas City Royals: SP Bruce Chen

13 of 30

Overview

Formerly a top Braves farmhand, Chen struggled early on in his big league career but has come on in the past two seasons with the Royals as he has won 12 games each season with a 3.96 ERA. He made just $2 million this past season and will likely command more on the open market so the Royals will have to decide if he is worth bringing back depending on his price.

Free Agent Options

The Royals took a chance on Jeff Francis last offseason with a one-year, $2 million deal and got solid production, and they could look to do the same this season. Guys like Chris Capuano, Rodrigo Lopez and Joel Pinero could represent low-risk, decent-reward options on one-year deals this season.

Internal Options

The Royals will bring back Luke Hochevar, Felipe Paulino, Danny Duffy and Sean O'Sullivan to the rotation, but the real future of the rotation lies with top prospects Mike Montgomery and John Lamb who could both see big-league action in 2012.

Los Angeles Angels: SP Joel Pineiro

14 of 30

Overview

Coming off of a 15-win season with the Cardinals, Pineiro signed a two-year, $16 million deal with the Angels heading into the 2010 season. After a strong first season in which he won 10 games with a 3.84 ERA, he saw his ERA spike to 5.13 this past season which will likely set him up for a one-year deal with a team hoping he bounces back.

Free Agent Options

The Angels will first address their third base situation and figure out what to do at first base with Kendry Morales and Mark Trumbo, and depending on whether or not they sign Aramis Ramirez they may not make any further offseason moves.

Internal Options

With Dan Haren, Jered Weaver and Ervin Santana locked into rotation spots and Tyler Chatwood likely joining them the Angels only need to fill their fifth rotation spot. Matt Palmer could get a shot at it, but prospect Garrett Richards is likely who the Angels would prefer to see in that spot.

Los Angeles Dodgers: SP Hiroki Kuroda

15 of 30

Overview

The Dodgers are finally on their way to having a new owner, but chances are things will not be worked out by the start of the season so this offseason could be a slow one for the Dodgers. As far as production, the biggest name they stand to lose is Japanese right-hander Hiroki Kuroda, and while he has said he prefers to stay with the Dodgers, there is a good chance he could return to Japan.

Free Agent Options

Much like the Royals, the Dodgers are a team that will be in the market for low-cost options looking for a bounce back season. The team signed Jon Garland to a $5 million deal and could go after a similar player this offseason such as Erik Bedard or Aaron Harang.

Internal Options

As it stands, the Dodgers have Clayton Kershaw, Clay Billingsley, Ted Lilly and Rubby De La Rosa as solid rotation members. The fifth spot could come down to Nathan Eovaldi, Dana Eveland and John Ely as the team certainly has options.

Milwaukee Brewers: 1B Prince Fielder

16 of 30

Overview

The Brewers went all-in on the 2011 season as they opted not to trade Prince Fielder and brought in a pair of starting pitchers, and while it landed them a playoff appearance, it was not enough to take home the title. There is little chance the Brewers bring back Fielder so the team will have to move on without their star slugger.

Free Agent Options

The Brewers will be unable to replace the production that Fielder posted, but if they do decide to sign someone to fill the hole at first base they could look at lower-cost options like Casey Kotchman, Derrek Lee or Carlos Pena.

Internal Options

While they could pursue the above listed players, the most likely option is that they make Mat Gamel their everyday first baseman. He hit .310 BA, 28 HR, 96 RBI last season at Triple-A and has simply been waiting for his chance.

Minnesota Twins: RF Michael Cuddyer

17 of 30

Overview

The Twins made the surprising decision to not become sellers at the deadline, holding onto free agent to be outfielders Jason Kubel and Michael Cuddyer. Now that both are free agents, the team will likely do their best to keep at least one of them, and while they would likely prefer it be Cuddyer, he no doubt will get more money elsewhere.

Free Agent Options

Replacing Cuddyer is more than just getting a new right fielder, as he was capable of playing first base, second base, third base and both corner outfield positions. Picking up someone like Jamey Carroll would give them a versatile utility player with solid offensive skills, although he is by no means the run producer Cuddyer is.

Internal Options

The Twins don't have much in the way of impact outfield prospects but should be set in Ben Revere and Denard Span at center and left field. As far as right field goes though, Rene Tosoni and Joe Benson would be the best internal options.

New York Mets: SS Jose Reyes

18 of 30

Overview

The Mets decided against dealing Jose Reyes at the deadline this past season in hopes they could get a jump on re-signing him. However, as the best free agent shortstop and lead off hitter by far, he could be pursued by more teams than anyone.

Free Agent Options

Should the Mets fail to re-sign Reyes, they could make a play for Jimmy Rollins or Rafael Furcal, but beyond those two there is not much on the market that could come even close to replacing Reyes.

Internal Options

If Reyes is gone, the most likely replacement for him would be Ruben Tejada who made his debut in 2010 at the age of 20. Last season, he hit .284 in 328 at bats while playing solid defense at second base and at the very least he could hold down the position until Wilmer Flores is ready.

New York Yankees: SP Freddy Garcia

19 of 30

Overview

The Yankees took a chance on Freddy Garcia last season on a one-year, $1.5 million contract and were rewarded with a 12-8 record and 3.62 ERA. That should be enough to get him a better deal this coming season, but at 35 years old, the Yankees may look for younger options.

Free Agent Options

The Yankees will be looking to upgrade their rotation in a big way this offseason, and that could mean adding a pair of top line starters and thanking Garcia for his services and sending him on his way. Whether it is C.J. Wilson, Mark Buehrle, Yu Dravish or someone else, the Yankees are going to set the market on starting pitching this year.

Internal Options

As is, the rotation would feature C.C. Sabathia, Ivan Nova, Phil Hughes and like it or not, A.J. Burnett. The fifth spot could then possibly go to top prospects Manny Banuelos and Dellin Betances if one of them are deemed ready.

Oakland Athletics: LF Josh Willingham

20 of 30

Overview

The Athletics need offense desperately and one of the few bright spots last season was the play of Josh Willingham as he hit 29 home runs a drove in 98 runs. While those numbers the team would no doubt love to have him back, but after Carlos Beltran, he may be the best outfielder on the market, and that will likely mean him costing more than the Athletics want to spend.

Free Agent Options

The Athletics are never the team to sign big money free agents, but will need to make up for the loss of Willingham. Depending on the price, someone like Cody Ross, Ryan Ludwick or Raul Ibanez could be plugged in left field to provide some offense.

Internal Options

Prospect Michael Taylor could step into the starting left field role and if his 20-20 potential transfers to the big leagues quickly, that would go a long way towards replacing Willingham. If he is not ready, slugger Jai Miller could step in as well after hitting 32 home runs in Triple-A last season.

Philadelphia Phillies: SP Roy Oswalt

21 of 30

Overview

The Phillies declined their $16 million option on Roy Oswalt, instead choosing to buy him out for $2 million, and while there is still a chance he could return to Philadelphia on a smaller contract, the safe bet is on him pitching elsewhere in 2012.

Free Agent Options

The Phillies are in the market for a left fielder and perhaps a third baseman, and they still have arguably the best rotation in the National League so replacing Oswalt is not a top priority. Still, they may look to add some depth to their rotation by adding a veteran arm on a short-term deal.

Internal Options

The rotation is still headed by Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels, and Vance Worley has locked up a fourth rotation spot. From there they could go with veterans Joe Blanton or Kyle Kendrick to hold down the fort while their impressive low-level pitching talent continues to progress through the minors.

Pittsburgh Pirates: 1B Derrek Lee

22 of 30

Overview

The Pirates have a fantastic core of young talent, and having addressed the catcher position by signing Rod Barajas, the most glaring need is at first base. Derrek Lee was acquired at the deadline last season and he hit .337 BA, 7 HR, 18 RBI in 28 games, and while he could be brought back, he is one of a handful of options the Pirates have.

Free Agent Options

Aside from Lee, the Pirates could also go after other mid-level options such as Carlos Pena or Casey Kotchman as that trio all provide solid offense and defense and likely will be had for a one-year deal which is ideal as the Pirates continue to rebuild.

Internal Options

Internally, the Pirates have an interesting option in Matt Hague at Triple-A as he hit .309 BA, 12 HR, 75 RBI last season and at 25 years old has little more to gain from the minor leagues.

San Diego Padres: CP Heath Bell

23 of 30

Overview

The Padres decided to deal Mike Adams at the deadline and hold onto All-Star closer Heath Bell instead, and he has stated that he would like to stay in San Diego. However, having a closer who is the highest paid player on their team may not make sense for the Padres at this point and he could be dealt.

Free Agent Options

The Padres have a boatload of needs, and aside from catcher, third base and center field they could potentially upgrade every position on the field through free agency. As far as free agent closer options, the team could go after a second-tier guy like Frank Francisco, Matt Capps or Joe Nathan.

Internal Options

It appeared as though Mike Adams would be the successor to Bell, but the Padres have a number of other impressive late-inning options. Luke Gregerson has been terrific since coming into the league, and Ernesto Frieri certainly has closer stuff and would likely be the top two options.

San Francisco Giants: RF Carlos Beltran

24 of 30

Overview

The Giants pulled the trigger on a big-time deal at the deadline last season when they sent top pitching prospect Zach Wheeler to the Mets for Carlos Beltran. However, they failed to make the playoffs and are now potentially looking at a .323 BA, 7 HR, 18 RBI line through 44 games as the only return on giving up Wheeler which could be reason enough to try to get Beltran back in the fold.

Free Agent Options

Should the team fail to bring Beltran back, they would once again be looking at a potentially anemic offense. Josh Willingham and Michael Cuddyer would be the top remaining outfielders, and Cuban Yoennis Cespedes could also be an option.

Internal Options

What was once a logjam in the outfield in San Francisco is now a much clearer situation as Andres Torres and Nate Schierholtz are the only returning players. That means top prospects Brandon Belt and Gary Brown will more than likely see at least some action in 2012.

Seattle Mariners: RP Jamey Wright

25 of 30

Overview

The Mariners had an impressive back-end of their bullpen last season if nothing else, as closer Brandon League made the All-Star team and veteran Jamey Wright had the best season of his career. A former top starting pitching prospect, Wright has enjoyed a second career as a reliever and made 60 appearances with a 3.16 ERA last season.

Free Agent Options

The Mariners have a lot of work to do offensively, as they have little to talk about outside of Justin Smoak or Dustin Ackley. In the past it was only closers who got top dollar on the open market, but more and more setup men are cashing in as well as teams look to add depth to their bullpen. That could mean letting Wright walk in favor of a cheaper veteran option, of which there are many.

Internal Options

Finding a reliable setup man is a crap shoot for the most part, and anyone could step up in Wright's absence next season. One potential candidate could be Tom Wilhelmsen, who made his debut last season at 27 years old, and appeared in 25 games, posting a 3.31 ERA and 8.3 K/9.

St. Louis Cardinals: 1B Albert Pujols

26 of 30

Overview

There is no question that the biggest name of the 2011 offseason is Albert Pujols, and the fact that the Cardinals won the World Series makes his decision on whether or not to come back that much more interesting. The team recently offered him the same nine-year, $210 million they did in spring training and indicated that they likely won't go much higher, if any.

Free Agent Options

Obviously it is hard to replace someone like Pujols, and while Prince Fielder puts up comparable numbers, the Cardinals may be unwilling to give him the monster deal they would Pujols. If it is not one of those two that the Cardinals sign, chances are it will be an in-house option.

Internal Options

The team has already re-signed Lance Berkman, and while he played well enough in right field last season, he would no doubt be better suited at first base. Moving him to first would open up a starting spot in right field for Allen Craig who hit .315 BA, 11 HR, 40 RBI in just 200 at bats. Consider that the likely Plan B if Pujols walks.

Tampa Bay Rays: DH Johnny Damon

27 of 30

Overview

After losing Carlos Pena and Carl Crawford in free agency last offseason, the Rays looked to replace some of the offensive void by signing veterans Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon. While Ramirez did not work out, Damon proved to be a good deal for $5.25 million. If they can bring him back for similar money they may, but if he is looking for a raise they will likely let him walk.

Free Agent Options

The Rays could look to add a first baseman with Casey Kotchman hitting free agency or try to bolster their bullpen, and it is always risky to spend big on a DH. Low-cost power options such as Xavier Nady, Vladimir Guerrero and former Ray Jonny Gomes could fill the void.

Internal Options

Moving Matt Joyce to designate hitter would make sense, as he is not the best defensive outfielder. As far as in-house DH options, if Joyce were left in the outfield, Dan Johnson could step into that role and Triple-A slugger Russ Canzler who had an OPS over .900 in each of the past two seasons is also an option.

Texas Rangers: SP C.J. Wilson

28 of 30

Overview

After watching their ace Cliff Lee walk after the 2010 season, the Rangers are once again facing the loss of the head of their staff as C.J. Wilson is a free agent and considered by many to be the top arm on the market. The Rangers will no doubt try to bring him back, but may not be willing or able to outbid the Yankees or other teams for his services.

Free Agent Options

The Rangers are an attractive destination right now after back-to-back AL pennants, and they will be one of the front runners for the services of Yu Darvish if he is in fact posted. The team could also make a play for Roy Oswalt and bring him back to Texas, and would realistically be in the market for other top arms such as Edwin Jackson or Mark Buehrle.

Internal Options

There has been a good deal of talk about moving closer Neftali Feliz to the rotation, and the addition of Padres reliever Mike Adams at the deadline last year gives the team someone capable of stepping into the closer role. Top prospect Martin Perez is also getting close to MLB-ready after reaching Triple-A for the first time last season.

Toronto Blue Jays: 2B Kelly Johnson

29 of 30

Overview

The Blue Jays acquired Kelly Johnson from the Diamondbacks at the deadline in the midst of a disappointing season, and whatever team ends up signing him for the 2011 season will be hoping he returns to his 2010 form when he hit .284 BA, 26 HR, 71 RBI, 13 SB.

Free Agent Options

The Blue Jays may very well bring Johnson back, especially if they view Brett Lawrie as a third baseman moving forward, and he is the best second baseman on the market. However, they will likely not want to sign him to a multi-year deal and that could be the reason he signs elsewhere. That could mean signing someone like Clint Barmes or Jamey Carroll as a fallback option.

Internal Options

The top internal option may be Brett Lawrie, who spent time at third base last season. The team may decide to move him back to his natural position to free up third base for Jose Bautista. If that is not the case, the team doesn't have much to work with as far as second basemen.

Washington Nationals: SP Livan Hernandez

30 of 30

Overview

After spending the prime of his career as a member of the Expos/Nationals, Livan Hernandez rejoined the team late in the 2009 season. He is no longer a dominant pitcher, but he is still a terrific innings eater and has a respectable 18 wins and 4.02 ERA over the past two seasons while throwing 387 innings over that span.

Free Agent Options

The Nationals are in need of a starting outfielder not named Jayson Werth, but seem ready to spend once again this offseason so expect the team to address that problem and then move onto adding a frontline starter. All of the top options on the market are a possibility at this point, and the team will likely look for a positive veteran presence to lead their young rotation, perhaps Mark Buehrle.

Internal Options

Getting Stephen Strasburg back for a full season is better than any free agent signing the team could make, and he'll be joined by Jordan Zimmerman, John Lannan and Chien-Ming Wang. Beyond them, Ross Detwiler and Tom Milone will also be pushing for a spot so the Nationals are by no means short on options.
