Pacquiao vs. Marquez: Mayweather Should Be Happy with Manny's Unimpressive Win
Floyd Mayweather should be feeling confident after watching Manny Pacquiao struggle with Juan Marquez for 12 back-and-forth rounds.
Although it seemed impossible, the outcome of this fight was even more controversial than the first two between Pacquiao and Marquez.
Despite eating uppercuts and right-handed counter punches all night long, Pacquiao was awarded the decision. The judges scored the fight 114-114, 115-113, 116-112.
Pacquiao said afterwards that he clearly won, but Marquez was so furious that he stormed out of the ring upon hearing the result.
"This is the second robbery of the two that we had, and I think this was even more clear than the first," Marquez said later. "We won with the clearer punches. I thought I got robbed. It happens again and again. I don't know what else I can do to win."
The fact this quote was even made should be thrilling for Mayweather, because it exhibits just how close this fight was.
Marquez provided Mayweather with an excellent blueprint for beating Pacquiao. He fought a beautifully technical fight and never allowed Pacquiao to get comfortable. Every time Pac-Man tried to go inside, Marquez would stagger him with devastating counter punches.
Mayweather is the best defensive fighter in the world, so he should have similar success. With his speed and counter-punching ability, he'll be able to land vicious blows to Pacquiao's face with ease.
If he can be just a little more aggressive than Marquez, Mayweather should have no trouble with Pacquiao.
