Penn State Scandal: Penn Governor Backs Up Claims WR Coach Had Moral Obligation

Ryan RudnanskyNov 13, 2011

Following nationwide uproar that Penn State receivers coach Mike McQueary should be fired, Penn State opted to place McQueary on administrative leave with pay.

Now it's clear that virtually the entire state of Pennsylvania believes McQueary had a moral obligation to report former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky's alleged behavior to the police.

Sandusky, facing 40 counts of sexual abuse against young boys, allegedly was seen raping a 10-year-old boy by McQueary in a Penn State locker room shower in 2002.

Now Gov. Tom Corbett, who was the attorney general when the investigation surrounding Sandusky began in 2009, is speaking up.

Corbett spoke on NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday morning, stating that while McQueary fulfilled his legal responsibility by reporting Sandusky's alleged actions to head coach Joe Paterno, he did not fulfill his moral responsibility to keep a child from harm.

Said Corbett, via College Football Talk, "He did not in my opinion meet a moral obligation that all of us would have.”

McQueary has since been placed on administrative leave, along with athletic director Tim Curley, while Paterno and president Graham Spanier have been fired. Senior vice president Gary Schultz resigned.

Although McQueary isn't facing any charges and will probably be fired or resign in due time, there is sure to be plenty of civil lawsuits on the way after Sandusky allegedly sexually abused at least eight boys in a period of 15 years while others sat idly by.

Hopefully, when the dust settles, Penn State can get back to being an institution that once held high morals.
