UFC on FOX Results: 4 Reasons Cain's Loss Was Good for His Career
Cain Velasquez was defeated by Junior dos Santos, but the loss may well serve to make Velasquez that much of a better fighter.
Velasquez is strong and resilient, and he can bounce back from this loss. Not only can he bounce back, he can bounce back as a significantly stronger competitor.
So why was this loss good for his career? What has he learned from it? Read and find out!
The Loss Will Make Him Improve His Striking Defense
1 of 4If there was a flaw in Velasquez's armor, it was his striking defense.
In his fight with Cheick Kongo, Velasquez was repeatedly tagged with big shots; his wrestling was the only thing that saved him from getting knocked out!
Striking defense is an essential part to beating Junior dos Santos' boxing-centric attack. Unfortunately for Velasquez, his striking defense wasn't up to par.
The loss will certainly make that apparent to him, and he'll come back to the Octagon a better, safer striker for it.
The Ring Rust Is Now Gone
2 of 4Velasquez had to fight Dos Santos off the back of a layoff that was a little bit over a year long.
When Velasquez fights next, he won't have that hurdle to jump over (barring any injuries).
His Game-Planning Will Improve
3 of 4If nothing else, Velasquez's loss to Dos Santos will make him rethink the way he approaches fights with dangerous strikers, and perhaps how he approaches fighting as a whole.
Next time he's in such a situation, he won't give Dos Santos time and space to tee-off. Instead, he'll push the pace with exhausting wrestling and make Dos Santos work.
He Will Walk Away a Better Fighter
4 of 4The losses of great fighters are often more important than their victories.
Why? Because they learn and improve dramatically from them.
For example, take the career of UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre. After suffering a humiliating defeat at the hands of Matt Serra, he recaptured the title and put together an amazing nine-fight winning streak that's still going strong.
If Velasquez walks away from his loss to Dos Santos with the same attitude that St-Pierre had when he lost to Serre, then the sky is the limit for him, and the loss on FOX was indeed good for his career.
