Penn State Scandal: The Latest News and Analysis
The time to begin to heal from the Jerry Sandusky grand jury report has begun. It’s been eight days since the grand jury testimony of a three year investigation was released. And by now you should know everything that was involved in that report.
There have been so many columns, reports, articles and whatever else you can post on YouTube about this report.
There's been a variety of sentiments regarding this matter, ranging from those who've supported the firing of head coach Joe Paterno to chastising everyone that was named in that report that had something to do with the cover up. It’s been combed over so much, that it’s time to move forward to seeing what can be done to make it better.
So, as we move to the first full week in the post-Paterno era of Penn State Football, let’s take a look at what is being said now about the Sandusky allegations, Paterno no longer coaching, and the fall out from the Penn State loss to Nebraska, 17-14.
First off, there are the tweets like this one from Sports Illustrated. They have a compelling report up on their website (that you can follow by clicking here for the tweet), about the government saying that Penn State’s (Mike) McQueary failed ‘moral obligation.
It’s not doubt looking at what was in the grand jury report, that grad assistant Mike McQueary should have stopped Sandusky, when he came across what he saw going on in the shower.
Next there is the tweet of the report from Deadspin about the Judge who set an unsecured bail for Jerry Sandusky.
It turns out that the judge was a Second Mile Volunteer with the foundation that was ran by Sandusky, where he allegedly preyed on underprivileged kids to abuse.
Lastly, among some of the thousands of tweets about Penn State, there is one from former WWE World Champion, Mick Foley, who runs the group RAINN, the Rape Abuse and Incest National Network.
It seems as if Foley recognizes that the alumni of Penn State want to help these victims out. And it’s great to see that the former WWE Champion is going to help use his celebrity and name recognition to help out Penn State in moving forward.
But, what really came from this weekend were the videos. There were two in particular that gripped the nation from the Penn State game.
First there was the meeting between both teams at the middle of the field before the game.
Each team put aside their differences and came together for one large pre-game prayer; a powerful scene to witness, as for a moment, football was second on a Saturday in Happy Valley.
There wasn’t much during the game, as both teams played some awful football. But, in the post game, as Joe Paterno’s son Jay was coming off the field, ESPN cameras caught up with him.
The video is a power scene, as a son missed seeing his father at work, a place that he has seen him at for his entire coaching career. A place that Jay has only known his father to work at for his entire life.
These tweets and videos were just a small sample size of everything that has happened over the past eight days. We couldn’t list every single vigil, riot, decision from the Penn State Board of Trustees, message from the new President of the university or whatever else you could think of.
It’s been a long week for everyone involved with Penn State. Hopefully this week everyone can get back to some normalcy in their lives.
