BCS Rankings: Stanford and Teams That Will Plummet in Week 12

Austin GreenNov 13, 2011

The college football world was mired in chaos Saturday as six ranked teams lost, including previously unbeaten Stanford and Boise State.

All this losing will have seismic effects on the newest BCS rankings when they are released in a few hours.

After falling in Week 11, look for these three teams to plummet down the rankings.

No. 4 Stanford Cardinal

The Cardinal were exposed as BCS pretenders when they got beat down 53-30 by Oregon.

I was skeptical about Stanford's 9-0 record because they have just one win against a quality team (USC). And even that took 56 points and three overtimes.

Andrew Luck is the best quarterback in the nation, but he can't make up for that miserable defense. They've only faced two BCS-caliber offenses this year and they gave up at least 48 points in each.

The Cardinal will appear in a BCS game, if only because of Luck's star appeal.

But this week, they will fall far.

Oregon, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Clemson and Virginia Tech should all surpass Stanford.

No. 5 Boise State Broncos

Boise State lost their first game of the season and BCS supporters everywhere rejoiced.

Every time the Broncos finish the season undefeated with a weak schedule, the need for a playoff system becomes more and more apparent.

But for the second year in a row the BCS was saved by an errant Boise State field goal.

I'm expecting the Broncos to fall out of the top 10.

No. 12 Penn State Nittany Lions

With all the off-field issues going on at Penn State, it would have been great for team morale if they could have beaten No. 19 Nebraska.

But they fell in their first game without Joe Paterno, losing 17-14 at home.

It doesn't get any easier for the Nittany Lions either, as they take on Ohio State and No. 18 Wisconsin to end the season.

Look for Penn State to drop out into the 20-22 range.
