UFC 139 Fight Card: Information and Predictions for Every Fight

G DNov 13, 2011

The UFC will look to continue its fast rise at UFC 139 on Nov. 19, 2011.

UFC 139 will take place in San Jose, Calif., in front of a sold-out HP Pavilion crowd beginning at 9 p.m. EST, 6 p.m. PST.

The main card will be headlined around former light heavyweight champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, who will square off with dangerous striker Dan Henderson.

In total, the fight card consists of five main card fights and seven preliminary bouts.

The following slides display info and predictions for every fight for UFC 139.

Let's take a look.

Shamar Bailey vs. Danny Castillo

1 of 12

Shamar Bailey

Career Record: 12-4

UFC Record: 1-1

Key Win: Ryan McGillivray

Key Loss: Evan Dunham

Danny Castillo

Career Record: 11-4

UFC Record: 1-1

Key Win: Joe Stevenson

Key Loss: Jacob Volkmann

Shamar Bailey and Danny Castillo will square off in a lightweight showdown.

Bailey and Castillo share nearly identical records and experience as they've both entered the Octagon just twice in their careers.

Castillo, who is the more well-rounded fighter, will look to control the action early as he holds the advantage in the stand up and the ground game.

However, Bailey has proved to be the better-conditioned fighter as he's gone to the judge's scorecard seven times in just 16 fights.

And while Castillo will do everything he can to finish Bailey, he'll have to settle for a decision.

Prediction: Castillo by Unanimous Decision

Matt Brown vs. Seth Baczynski

2 of 12

Matt Brown

Career Record: 12-10

UFC Record: 5-4

Key Wins: Pete Sell, John Howard

Key Losses: Ricardo Almeida, Chris Lytle

Seth Baczynski

Career Record: 14-6

UFC Record: 1-1

Key Win: Clay Harvison

Key Loss: Brad Tavares

In what has potential to be one of the more exciting bouts of the evening at UFC 139, Matt Brown will meet fellow welterweight Seth Baczynski.

It's very unlikely that UFC fans around the globe will witness this bout going to the judge's scorecards as both fighters have a tendency to finish their fights.

Brown will come out swinging for the fences and attempt to keep the fight in the stand up.

However, Baczynski is a submission specialist. Nine of his 14 career wins have come by way of tap out.

Unfortunately for Brown, he's submitted eight times through the course of his career.

Prediction: Baczynski by Round 2 Submission

Miguel Torres vs. Nick Pace

3 of 12

Miguel Torres

Career Record: 38-4

UFC Record: 1-1

Key Win: Antonio Banuelos

Key Loss: Demetrious Johnson

Nick Pace

Career Record: 6-2

UFC Record: 1-1

Key Win: Will Campuzano

Key Loss: Ivan Menjivar

In one of the most predictable bouts of the evening, Miguel Torres will look to bounce back from his recent defeat to Demetrious Johnson when he takes on Nick Pace.

There is no doubt that Torres will look for an early chance to take Pace to the ground since he is one of the best submission artists in the UFC today.

If Pace wants any chance of remaining in the fight, he'll have to demonstrate an effective take down defense or he could find himself in trouble early.

While Pace may hold strong in the first few minutes, Torres will eventually find a way to place Pace in an unwanted position and finish him from there.

Prediction: Torres by Round 1 Submission

Gleison Tibau vs. Rafael Dos Anjos

4 of 12

Gleison Tibau

Career Record: 23-7

UFC Record: 9-5

Key Wins: Jeremy Stephens, Terry Etim

Key Losses: Melvin Guillard, Jim Miller

Rafael Dos Anjos

Career Record: 15-5

UFC Record: 4-3

Key Wins: George Sotiropoulos, Terry Etim

Key Losses: Clay Guida, Jeremy Stephens

Gleison Tibau and Rafael Dos Anjos will enter the octagon at UFC 139 on the best stretch of their mixed martial arts careers.

It's likely that this bout could start slow since each fighter usually takes the time to feel his opponent out.

However, after the first few minutes, UFC fans can expect an aggressive battle that is taken to the ground.

Tibau is the much more conditioned and experienced fighter, so the chances are Dos Anjos will be on his back frequently throughout the fight.

However, Dos Anjos has shown effective grappling skills, which could lead this bout to a judge's decision.

Prediction: Tibau by Unanimous Decision

Tom Lawlor vs. Chris Weidman

5 of 12

Tom Lawlor

Career Record: 7-3 (1)

UFC Record: 3-2

Key Wins: Patrick Cote, Kyle Kingsbury

Key Loss: Aaron Simpson

Chris Weidman

Career Record: 6-0

UFC Record: 2-0

Key Win: Alessio Sakara

Key Losses: N/A

Chris Weidman will enter the Octagon in hopes of remaining unbeaten in his mixed martial arts career.

The only thing standing in the way of Weidman's seventh consecutive win is Tom Lawlor.

Both Weidman and Lawlor are well-rounded fighters in both the stand-up and the ground game.

When action begins, it will be Weidman who looks to take control early by overwhelming his opponent with strikes as he's done in his previous bouts.

While Lawlor has never been knocked out in his career, Weidman will find a way to extend his UFC record to 3-0 when all is said and done.

Prediction: Weidman by Unanimous Decision

Michael McDonald vs. Alex Soto

6 of 12

Michael McDonald

Career Record: 13-1

UFC Record: 2-0

Key Wins: Chris Cariaso, Cole Escovedo

Key Loss: Cole Escovedo

Alex Soto

Career Record: 6-0-1

UFC Record: 0-0

Key Win: Brady Harrison

Key Losses: N/A

Michael McDonald will look to remain unbeaten when he enters the Octagon to take on UFC newcomer Alex Soto.

Neither McDonald nor Soto allow their bouts to go to the judge's scorecards since they have a tendency to finish their fights often.

It's likely McDonald will come out of the gate throwing hay-makers in attempts of ending Soto's UFC debut early.

If Soto can defend against McDonald's exceptional striking, he'll become more comfortable and look to take the fight to the ground.

However, Soto has yet to fight at the premier stage of mixed martial arts, which could effect his performance.

Prediction: McDonald by Round 2 TKO

Ryan Bader vs. Jason Brilz

7 of 12

Ryan Bader

Career Record: 12-2

UFC Record: 5-2

Key Wins: Antonio Nogueira, Keith Jardine

Key Losses: Jon Jones, Tito Ortiz

Jason Brilz

Career Record: 18-4-1

UFC Record: 3-3

Key Wins: Tim Boetsch, Eric Shafer

Key Losses: Antonio Nogueira, Eliot Marshall

Ryan Bader and Jason Brilz will enter UFC 139 having lost two consecutive fights.

While Bader has certainly faced some of the UFC's best, Brilz isn't too far behind.

The key to this light heavyweight matchup will be how Brilz can respond to Bader's aggressive fight style along with being outmatched in age by eight years.

While Bader is a well-rounded mixed martial artist, he'll want to keep the fight in the stand up as Brilz is an exceptional submission artist.

Brilz may try to take Bader to the ground but will more than likely be unsuccessful doing so.

Prediction: Bader by Round 1 TKO

Stephan Bonnar vs. Kyle Kingsbury

8 of 12

Stephan Bonnar

Career Record: 13-7

UFC Record: 7-6

Key Wins: Krzysztof Soszynski, Keith Jardine

Key Losses: Jon Jones, Forrest Griffin, Lyoto Machida

Kyle Kingsbury

Career Record: 11-2 (1)

UFC Record: 4-1

Key Wins: Ricardo Romero, Jared Hamman

Key Loss: Tom Lawlor

Despite getting off to a slow start in his UFC career, Kyle Kingsbury has reeled off four consecutive fights and will look to continue his recent success when he meets fan-favorite Stephan Bonnar at UFC 139.

The light heavyweight matchup between Kingsbury and Bonnar has potential to be the fight of the night as fans know how these two can scrap.

Depending on which Bonnar comes to fight, we could see an all-out slugfest or we could see a fight that remains on the ground most of the night.

While Bonnar may try to overwhelm his opponent with his strikes, Kingsbury has one of the most underrated chins in the 205-pound weight division.

Prediction: Kingsbury by Unanimous Decision

Martin Kampmann vs. Rick Story

9 of 12

Martin Kampmann

Career Record: 17-5

UFC Record: 8-4

Key Wins: Carlos Condit, Paulo Thiago

Key Losses: Diego Sanchez, Jake Shields

Rick Story

Career Record: 13-4

UFC Record: 6-2

Key Wins: Johny Hendricks, Thiago Alves.

Key Loss: Charlie Brenneman

Martin Kampmann and Rick Story share similar stories as they were considered two of the best up-and-coming fighters in the UFC when they first entered years ago.

However, both have fallen as of late and will look to get their careers back on track when they meet at UFC.

When the action begins, fans can expect Kampmann to attempt to make a statement as hardly any of his bouts make the judge's scorecards.

Story will have to be very careful to not get caught early in the fight. It's likely Story will attempt to use his exceptional wrestling skills on Kampmann when the time is right.

But, he has to get Kampmann to the ground before that can happen.

Prediction: Kampmann by Round 2 TKO

Urijah Faber vs. Brian Bowles

10 of 12

Urijah Faber

Career Record: 25-5

UFC Record: 1-1

Key Wins: Dominick Cruz, Jeff Curran, Eddie Wineland

Key Loss: Dominick Cruz, Jose Aldo

Brian Bowles

Career Record: 10-1

UFC Record: 2-0

Key Wins: Takeya Mizugaki, Miguel Torres

Key Loss: Dominick Cruz

Urijah Faber vs. Brian Bowles could very well be the most-anticipated fight of the evening at UFC 139 for some fans.

It's likely that the winner will move on to face current bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz in early 2012.

Something will have to give when action begins as both Faber and Bowles are two of the best submission artists in the 135-pound weight class.

While Faber has been known for his strong take downs, he hasn't showed them as of late as he's been the one being taken down.

Bowles will need to prove he can successfully defend against Faber's submission attempts or he may find himself in an unwanted position at some point Saturday night.

Prediction: Faber by Round 3 Submission

Wanderlei Silva vs. Cung Le

11 of 12

Wanderlei Silva

Career Record: 33-11-1 (1)

UFC Record: 3-6

Key Wins: Michael Bisping, Keith Jardine, Rampage Jackson

Key Losses: Dan Henderson, Chris Leben, Rampage Jackson

Cung Le

Career Record: 7-1

UFC Record: 0-0

Key Wins: Scott Smith, Frank Shamrock

Key Loss: Scott Smith

Wanderlei Silva and Cung Le will enter the Octagon for a fight that could be over in the blink of an eye.

Both Silva and Le are two of the hardest hitters in the middleweight division as they've knocked out a combined 30 opponents in their careers.

When the action begins, fans can expect these two strikers to be swinging for the knockout in hopes of ending each other's night early.

Silva and Le both possess fairly strong chins, so it will be interesting to see which fighter falls first.

Many believe it will be Silva's last fight, which means he will be looking to put on a show for the fans in attendance.

But his long-lived career might not end the way he expected.

Prediction: Le by Round 2 TKO

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua vs. Dan Henderson

12 of 12

Mauricio Rua

Career Record: 20-5

UFC Record: 4-3

Key Wins: Forrest Griffin, Lyoto Machida, Chuck Liddell

Key Losses: Jon Jones, Forrest Griffin, Lyoto Machida

Dan Henderson

Career Record: 28-8

UFC Record: 5-2

Key Wins: Rich Franklin, Michael Bisping, Fedor Emelianenko

Key Losses: Anderson Silva, Jake Shields, Rampage Jackson

In the main event of the evening at UFC 139, former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua will look to continue his recent success when he squares off with heavy-hitting Dan Henderson.

Rua and Henderson are two of the hardest hitters in the entire UFC as they've demonstrated an ability to drop their opponent with just one swing.

It's likely that Rua will be the aggressor early as he'll try to overwhelm Henderson in his first appearance in the Octagon since July 2009.

But fans shouldn't expect Henderson to be phased as he'll shrug off any early attempt by Rua.

The longer the fight continues, the more comfortable Henderson will become as he's won via decision 13 times in his mixed martial arts career.

As Rua begins to slow down later in the fight, look for Henderson to capitalize with his vicious strikes.

Prediction: Henderson by Round 3 TKO
