Mike McQueary: Should He Ever Be Allowed Back on the Nittany Lions Sideline?

Jim SullivanNov 13, 2011

In terms of morality, Mike McQueary is on the same plateau as Joe Paterno. He failed to follow through on his responsibility as a human being to make sure Sandusky was promptly arrested and thrown in jail for his alleged crimes.

Instead he, like JoePa, failed to report the man he respected as his friend to law enforcement, ultimately leading to his suspension. Although he did nothing wrong legally, his lack of ability to uphold a moral code we as Americans live by should be too much for the university to look past.

I can't understand them giving him a pass if they already fired his superior, Paterno. Their overall "moral crimes" are the exact same, just on different levels of authority. McQueary should never be allowed back on the Penn State sideline ever again.

As a graduate assistant, he allegedly witnessed something unspeakable occurring in the locker room where he used to dress up for games. The next day, he reported this act by the Penn State defensive coordinator to his head coach and trusted confidant, Paterno, trusting that he would take the necessary steps to fix the situation.

However, seeing that Paterno did not in fact report his friend to law enforcement, McQueary should have been to first to go the police. He is the one that allegedly witnessed the act and had first-hand knowledge of what was happening and to who. His respect for Sandusky should have been ignored, for no amount of friendship or respect can account for what he did.

As harsh as this sounds, Paterno's and McQueary's situations were very similar. Paterno was in a more powerful position, but both had the ability to go straight to the authorities and report Sandusky. Neither should receive a more lenient punishment from the university.

As far as McQueary's coaching career is concerned, it'll be hard for him to retain a job at any top tier university now that they know his moral code is in question. His skills as a coach will be lost in translation by any university he applies to.

Don't expect to see the redhead coach on the sideline at Penn State ever again.
