BCS Rankings: Penn State Has No Chance to Finish Season in Top 25
Penn State was on the verge of winning the Big Ten and going BCS bowling this season.
And then every single thing went wrong.
First, allegations of former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky’s disgusting and vile acts against young children came to the surface.
Subsequently, Joe Paterno was fired mere hours after announcing he would retire at the end of the season.
And then Saturday, the Nittany Lions were shut down on a 4th-and-1 as they attempted to make a heroic late-game comeback after being down 17 points against the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
It was a fitting ending to the darkest week in the history of the university.
Now the team will slowly fade into obscurity as they have already dropped from No. 12 in the AP and Coaches Polls down to No. 21.
The BCS rankings come out later today and they will without a doubt show Penn State falling from their graces as well.
That game against Nebraska was Penn State’s last home game of the season and it was unfortunate to have such a somber time in school history be the last time those seniors had a chance to play in Beaver Stadium.
It also means they have two tough road games to close the season out against Ohio State, a team rocked by scandal last year but still competitive, and Wisconsin, who hasn’t lost at Camp Randall this year.
What could have been two potential wins, an inaugural Big Ten championship game appearance and BCS bowl to send Paterno off the right way has now turned into a season that will end with an interim coach at some mediocre bowl game that will be overshadowed by Sandusky’s alleged actions.
Penn State will definitely lose to Wisconsin and I can’t see them winning against Ohio State either. They will be unranked next week and we won’t see them back in the BCS rankings for an extremely long time.
