UFC on Fox Results: 5 Reasons Why Ben Henderson Will Wear UFC Gold
On Saturday night, Ben Henderson made it official: the WEC lightweights are for real.
Henderson defeated Clay Guida via unanimous decision in one of the most exciting fights of the year.
Henderson is now on a three fight winning streak in the UFC, with victories over Jim Miller (who was one win away from a title shot) and Clay Guida (in a No. 1 contender match).
Now, Henderson will fight Frankie Edgar at UFC 144 in Japan.
Here are five reasons why Henderson will come back stateside with the UFC lightweight title.
He's a Better Wrestler
1 of 5Henderson was able to handle Guida, and most of his takedown attempts.
Guida is one of the best, and most relentless, wrestlers in the division, at one point having a hold of Bendo's legs and driving all the way across the Octagon.
Henderson didn't go down.
Henderson will be able to stop Edgar's takedowns, and will likely be able to take Edgar down whenever he sees fit.
That will be aided by the fact that...
He's Bigger
2 of 5Frankie Edgar walks around at about 160 pounds, and has to cut very little, if anything, to make the 155 pound lightweight limit.
However, Ben Henderson has to strip down almost every time to make the 155 limit.
Henderson is a big, powerful and strong lightweight, and he'll be able to use that to control Edgar on the ground or in the clinch.
Bendo was able to control Guida, who is a small lightweight, but Edgar is the only one who may be smaller than Guida.
He Has the Cardio to Keep Up with Edgar
3 of 5It is well known that two of the men with the best cardio in the lightweight division are Frankie Edgar and Clay Guida.
Henderson was able to keep pace with Guida on Saturday night, and didn't show any signs of slowing down.
Edgar has been able to rely on his outstanding cardio to win the later rounds, with his in-and-out boxing style, but he won't have that ability with Henderson.
He'll still be as fresh in the fourth as in the first, and additionally...
He's Relentless
4 of 5Henderson isn't someone who has his cardio just in case he needs it.
He uses his cardio to push the pace of fights, and gives his opponents absolutely no breathing room.
Edgar likes to stand and trade with his quick punches and good head movement.
He won't be able to do that when Bendo is pushing him up against the cage, beating him up, and closing the distance.
He Has Gone Five Rounds Before
5 of 5Often, when someone is going to challenge for a title, it will be their first time going five rounds.
That won't be the case with Henderson.
It will be his fifth time preparing for a five-round fight, and he has gone the full five rounds twice.
It will also be Edgar's fifth time preparing for a five round fight, and he has gone the distance three times.
Edgar won't have the experience edge in the deep waters for this fight.
Henderson will be prepared, and Henderson will take that belt.
