Manny Pacquiao: Why Floyd Mayweather Will Be Tougher Than Marquez
Manny Pacquiao escaped by the skin of his teeth on Saturday night to defeat Juan Manuel Marquez for the second time. Marquez came out with a beautiful strategy that threw Pacquiao off for seven rounds but then Pac-Man finally got it together escaping with a majority decision.
Now the talks are really going to heat up in the boxing world, and people will be screaming for Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather. If Pac-Man thinks Marquez is tough, he will be in for a rude awakening if or when he fights Mayweather.
If we do see the fight, Pacquiao’s poor showing on Saturday night makes Mayweather the favorite. Taking nothing away from Marquez, because he was terrific, Pac-Man didn’t look as dominant in the middle rounds. However, because he polished off Marquez late, showing the true heart of a champion, Pac-Man still deserves to have his share of the majority’s opinion.
Mayweather is pound-for-pound one of the top two fighters in the world, if not the best. He is undefeated, a statistic that nobody can knock. To be the best you have to beat the best. Mayweather is the best right now.
We all just want to watch so the results can tell us who the best is.
When Marquez and Mayweather tangled in 2009, Floyd grabbed the unanimous decision (120-107, 119-108, 118-109). He even knocked Marquez down in the second round.
You can't make a great opinion from that because everybody is different. However, if you are arguing with somebody about the fight this reminder isn't a bad thing to bring up.
As I was browsing Twitter last night attempting to get a scope at the public opinion, I couldn’t find out just how convincing people thought Pac-Man was. Some said Marquez should have won, some said Pac-Man won by a marginal defeat. Are these Pacquiao supporters? It’s tough to tell.
All I know is this: I was leaning towards Pacquiao before last night. Marquez is a tremendous fighter, who seems to give Pac-Man problems, but his performance is making me lean on the side of Mayweather. Things could change in the relative future, but for now I have to go with the guy who has never lost.
