UFC on Fox: Is Junior Dos Santos' Win over Cain Velasquez Being Over-Hyped?

Jordy McElroyNov 13, 2011

It was pronounced by many as the greatest heavyweight championship bout in UFC history, but the actual fight only lasted 64 seconds.

In an historic night, the UFC made its network debut on Fox, and Dos Santos stopped undefeated wrecking machine Cain Velasquez to become the new UFC Heavyweight Champion.

The MMA world is buzzing about Dos Santos' dominant performance over Velasquez, who entered the octagon on Saturday night as a fairly hefty favorite. It was a great performance, but the way it all unfolded still leaves question marks surrounding Dos Santos' overall fight game.

With that said, is Dos Santos' win over Velasquez being over-hyped?

For Dos Santos fans, this question seems completely ludicrous. Velasquez was undefeated, and Dos Santos just beat him in 64 seconds. How can anyone over-hype that?

Coming into this bout, the fight was predominantly perceived as a striker versus grappler matchup. If Velasquez secured takedowns, he could maintain top position and punish Dos Santos for multiple rounds.

If Dos Santos could keep the fight standing, he would only need a small window of an opening to land a fight-ending haymaker to put an early end to Velasquez's night, which is exactly how everything unfolded.

Dos Santos caught Velasquez in the open with a beautifully placed overhand right. As the No. 2 heavyweight in the world and quite possibly the best striker in the entire division, he made Velasquez pay for a mistake on the feet.

While it is always an incredible feat to ever capture UFC gold, there really wasn't anything shocking about Dos Santos' performance.

If Dos Santos would've stuffed a multitude of takedowns and beat up Velasquez for a round or two, there would've been much more to go on. Instead, we are left with the same questions we had going into the fight.

If pressured, does Dos Santos have the gas tank to go the distance? How good is his takedown defense? What does his ground game look like?

The clichéd saying of "anything can happen" stands tall in MMA. With four ounce gloves, the margin for error is incredibly small, and one mistake can change the tone of an entire fight.

Coming off a year layoff, Velasquez looked good on the feet before eating the overhand. He tore at Dos Santos' legs with kicks and landed in the pocket.

How many times have we seen fighters get caught with a big punch in MMA?

The list includes just about every legendary fighter that ever stepped foot in a cage or ring.

As a longtime contender turned champion, Dos Santos takes his rightful place at the top of the heavyweight division, but fans shouldn't dismiss Velasquez as some scrub who got dominated.

Dos Santos and Velasquez are still the top two heavyweights to watch, and this probably won't be the last time these men do battle.

At UFC on Fox, Velasquez finally proved he was human, and Dos Santos proved he was a champion.

Fans of the sport to should look forward to a reinvigorated Velasquez working his way back into the title picture, and Dos Santos defending against the winner of the UFC 141 blockbuster tilt between Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem.

Regardless of personal opinion, we all know a Dos Santos and Velasquez bout has more to offer than merely 64 seconds worth of action.
