Manny Pacquiao: Why Floyd Mayweather Jr. Will Be Tougher Than Marquez

Jess Matthew BeltranNov 13, 2011

Manny Pacquiao won a majority decision against Juan Manuel Marquez last Saturday night, November 12.

However, the fight dubbed as “the decision” still came up short on living up to its name. The fight  ended in controversy—instead of providing a definite answer, many questions are left unanswered.

Pacquiao fought with controlled aggression on Marquez’s game plan. He was fighting mainly in spurts while Marquez came out with a good battle plan. Marquez was fighting Manny from a distance, and once Manny went in, he counter punched his way out. It was a problem from their two previous bouts, and it seemed Manny still didn’t have a solution for it.

He fought at a pace with which a 38-year-old Marquez could easily cope.

I guess Marquez already has a clear blueprint on how to defeat Pacquiao.

Floyd Mayweather Jr., who fought Marquez way back in 2009 with a clear unanimous decision, can take advantaged of Pacquiao’s weaknesses.

Mayweather, a master defensive artist and a good counter puncher, has the right tools to outscore Manny. If Marquez can consistently land right hands on Pacquiao, then I don’t see Mayweather having a problem in landing his own.

The people and the world have been calling for Mayweather and Pacquiao’s anticipated matchup. But for a million and one reasons, all talks have been stalled due to differences between the camps. Maybe now there is an indication that this fight will really happen.

The ground work has been laid down for Mayweather, and with a guaranteed $20 million or more, it’s a no-brainer.

Mayweather can give Pacquiao lots of problems. If Marquez is a jigsaw puzzle, then Floyd is a never-ending maze.

Many have questioned Pacquiao’s win against Marquez.

It was a close fight, and even though there were no knockdowns, it could have gone either way. The difference was that Manny had the edge on power shots (117-100 according to CompuBox). However, I do think Marquez had done enough to win the fight.

Pacquiao escaped with a win, but I don’t think he can pull a Houdini against Floyd. There is room for improvement. The fighter with a good battle plan always goes to war confident and prepared. It’s time to go back to the drawing board.

When questions are left unanswered, it is logical to look for good solutions. Marquez deserves a rematch with Pacquiao. However, with Marquez contemplating retirement after his breaking loss with Pacquiao, it looks like the battle between Mayweather and Pacquiao is looming.

Will it ever happen? Questions, questions…I had hoped this time there would have been a definite answer.
