Phillies Sign Chan Ho Park

Kevin McGuireDec 15, 2008

EDIT: As I hit the publish button on this post I heard the news that the Phillies may have reached an agreement with Jamie Moyer. Stay tuned.

EDIT: In fact Moyer, 46, has been signed by the Phillies. 2 years, somewhere in the neighborhood of $10-$14 million

The Phillies signed 35-year-old right hander Chan Ho Park to a one year deal worth $2.5 million. With bonuses Park could make as much as $5 million.

So where does Park fit in? The move has some flexibility. With the price tag Park will almost certainly be on the active roster coming out of spring training and he could be placed in the starting rotation with a good showing in Clearwater or he could be used out of the bullpen, which is more likely. Park could provide the Phillies with a solid sixth or seventh inning when called upon. He has been pretty effective but will not put too much fear into any opposing lineup. Park says the club wanted him as a starter though, which, if true, seems to indicate that the Jamie Moyer questions may be answered.

With Park's statement that he will be a starter the starting rotation, hypothetically, could look like this;

Washington Nationals v Los Angeles Angels
New York Yankees v. Chicago Cubs
  1. Cole Hamels
  2. Brett Myers
  3. Jamie Moyer
  4. Joe Blanton
  5. Carlos Carrasco/Kyle Kendrick/JA Happ/Chan Ho Park/Adam Eaton

That could change dramatically if the Phillies come through and sign Derek Lowe or Moyer. Lowe or Moyer would fill the third spot in the rotation, assuming Myers has worked out his kinks from 2008. The fifth spot will be determined in spring training and it is my hope that Kendrick gets his act together or Carrasco makes enough progress to earn the spot and gets his major league career started.
