Velasquez vs. Dos Santos: JDS Will Easily Triumph in Massive Fight

Richard LangfordNov 12, 2011

Junior dos Santos will take Cain Velasquez's title in the second round of their UFC title fight.

This opinion runs contrary to popular thought as most favor the well-rounded champ Velasquez to retain his title. Bodog Sports has him listed as a -160 favorite to win.

Popular thought will be wrong in this one. Here's why:

JDS' Jiu-Jitsu Edge

These are two evenly matched fighters. They both have strong all-around attacks, but dos Santos has a deeper arsenal. Velasquez has a clear advantage in wrestling skills, but JDS will use his diverse attack to prevent this fight from going to the mat.

Dos Santos is an elite BJJ practitioner. He will use this to keep this from turning into a bout decided by wrestling. He has ended four matches by submission and this very well could be the fifth.

The Layoff

Cain Velasquez has not been in the Octagon since his triumph over Brock Lesnar. That was 13 months ago.

As we've seen in matches in the past a long layoff can be difficult to overcome. In UFC 114 Quinton “Rampage” Jackson came out a shell of himself against Rashad Evans after a lengthy layoff.

Nate “The Rock” Quarry tried to come back after a nearly two-year layoff in UFC 66, and failed mightily.

Against top-notch opponents there is no room for error. And the accumulation of rust leaves room for error.

No matter how hard a fighter trains, there is simply no substitute for being in the actual Octagon.

This will be the ultimate cause of Velasquez's downfall.
