UFC on FOX Results: Cain Velasquez Will Keep Undefeated Record Alive Against JDS

Mike ChiariNov 12, 2011

When Cain Velasquez defends his UFC Heavyweight Championship against Junior Dos Santos at the inaugural UFC on FOX event on Saturday night, it will be a battle between two of the sport's elite heavyweight fighters.

Velasquez holds a career record of 9-0 with eight knockout victories, while Dos Santos has lost just once in 14 fights. With that said, something has to give on Saturday, and although the two men would seem evenly matched, I think Velasquez holds the advantage.

Dos Santos would seem to be the more well-rounded fighter at this point as he has won fights in a great variety of ways. He is capable of knocking his opponent out, making them submit or going the distance and winning it on the scorecards.

Velasquez, on the other hand, is more one-dimensional. He has won eight of his nine fights via the knockout, with the other win being a decisive decision victory over Cheick Kongo. What Velasquez lacks in versatility, though, he more than makes up for in dominance.

It is safe to say that no fighter at any level of the UFC is more dominant right now than Velasquez. Most of his fights don't even make it out of the first round, including his demolition of Brock Lesnar at UFC 121 that netted him the title last year.

If Dos Santos can weather what is sure to be a storm of ferocious punches in the first round, then he stands a chance. I think Velasquez fully realizes how big this fight is, though, so I expect him to come out firing and looking for a first-round TKO.

The longer the fight drags on, the more the momentum shifts to Dos Santos in my opinion, as he has much more experience going deep in fights. That will be much easier said than done for Dos Santos, however, as few before him have been able to last past the first few minutes of the fight against Velasquez.

I don't want to count out Dos Santos completely, but if he is going to win tonight, then it will have to be by decision. Velasquez is a monster and is unquestionably one of the toughest men in UFC. For that reason, I simply don't see Dos Santos knocking him out or making him tap out.

This will likely be Velasquez's toughest test to date as Dos Santos has never been knocked out. If anyone is going to do it, though, it will be Velasquez, and I most definitely believe he will get the job done.
