UFC on FOX Results: Questions Answered and Lessons Learned

Matt SaccaroNov 12, 2011

The UFC's historic debut on FOX was a resounding success. Junior dos Santos defeated Cain Velasquez in one of the best heavyweight fights in recent memory.

However, there were a slew of other fights that weren't seen on FOX that had their own significance on MMA.

So what other questions were answered and lessons were learned from the "dark" matches? Read and find out!

Light Heavyweight Is Aaron Rosa's Weight Class

1 of 12

Aaron Rosa defeated wrestler Matt Lucas in the very first preliminary bout on UFC on FOX.

Rosa appeared significantly trimmer and was in excellent shape for this fight, proving that light heavyweight is a fitting weight class for the Texas native.

In addition, his takedown defense and ability to scramble looked polished. If he keeps up his current rate of improvement, he could be dangerous.

Alex Caceres Is Revitalized

2 of 12

After going 1-4 in his last five fights, Alex Caceres (a.k.a. Bruce Leroy) looked like a fighter with much more refined skills.

Caceres kept calm throughout the fight and rarely got overly aggressive. This enabled him to pick apart MMA veteran Cole Escovedo in dramatic fashion.

Nevertheless, Caceres still has some more to work on (his takedown defense, and sometimes he did get a bit sloppy in his striking) before he will become a true contender at bantamweight.

Robert Peralta Is Good but May Have a Low Ceiling

3 of 12

Peralta looked skilled in his victory over Mackens Semerzier but still needs a bit of work before he can contend with the higher level fighters of the division. After all, he won in large part due to an unintentional headbutt.

Peralta needs to work on his takedown defense, clinch work, and tighten up his punches a bit before he can be a true threat to the top echelon lightweights.

Still, he is an exciting fighter which will almost definitely keep him around the UFC for a while.

Darren Uyenoyama Is Either Really Good or Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto Is Really Bad

4 of 12

Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto was once considered to be one of the best fighters in the world.

Now, he's 1-4 in his last five, with his most recent loss being to grappling standout Darren Uyenoyama.

Uyenoyama dominated Yamamoto with superior grappling and nearly choked the Japanese fighter out at the end of the first round. Either Uyenoyama is really good, or Yamamoto was just really overrated.

But for Yamamoto there is one consolation, he has a great fashion sense. Did you see his cool shorts?

The Pit Is Dying

5 of 12

Clay Harvison, one of the best prospects from the once-legendary gym known simply as "The Pit," was easily defeated by an average competitor in Demarques Johnson.

The only other prominent fighter in the UFC that The Pit has Court McGee. If his career takes a turn for the worse, then the gym that produced Chuck Liddell will forever lose its relevance in modern MMA.

Overconfidence Is the Greatest Enemy

6 of 12

Cub Swanson was proving that he was the better fighter until he got a bit too confident. He showed no urgency when Ricardo Lamas took his back and was punished accordingly.

Lamas submitted Swanson with a viciously tight arm-triangle choke in the second round, proving that overconfidence is the greatest enemy.

Dustin Poirier Needs an Elite Opponent

7 of 12

Dustin Poirier was too much for Pablo Garza to handle.

Poirier's striking was better, as were his grappling skills and overall physical abilities. These advantages allowed him to choke Garza out in the second round.

At the age of 22, Poirier could be the future at featherweight. He only needs to fight an elite opponent so the MMA world can figure out how good he really is.

Benson Henderson Will Be Fighting Frankie Edgar, Clay Guida Isn't Top Echelon

8 of 12

After all the hype and action, it was Benson Henderson's hand that was raised; he was the superior fighter.

Henderson will therefore face Frankie Edgar in Japan for the UFC lightweight title.

As for Guida, he put on an admirable performance but he was overmatched. Sadly, he's just unable to defeat the very top echelon of fighters.

FOX Is Taking the UFC Seriously

9 of 12

Did you hear the jingle that FOX was using on the broadcast. That's the same one they use for the NFL. Just think about it, the UFC is getting the same treatment as the NFL.

And people still question that the sport is mainstream?

A Football Commentator Can Do MMA Commentating

10 of 12

For a football commentator, CUrt Menefee did a great job broadcasting an MMA event.

He was knowledgeable and he treated the sport (as well as UFC president Dana White and former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar) with respect and he made it feel like a legitimate, high-class sporting event.

Cain Velasquez May Have a Questionable Chin

11 of 12

Cain Velasquez was put away by Brazilian slugger Junior Dos Santos in the very first round.

Velasquez was getting tagged—and hurt—multiple times by Cheick Kongo in their fight, which gave people the impression that his chin was questionable.

This knockout loss to Dos Santos adds more evidence to these claims.

Junior Dos Santos Is the Man...for Now

12 of 12

Junior Dos Santos proved that his combination of takedown defense and powerful boxing is a recipe for success.

Dos Santos is on top of the world...for now. What will happen when he meets either Brock Lesnar or Alistair Overeem? It's too early to tell. For now, let us just enjoy the rags-to-riches story of Junior Dos Santos.
