Mark Dennehy and Merrimack Hockey Continue Growing (and Winning) Together
Merrimack College, led by head coach Mark Dennehy, continues its winning ways. The last unbeaten team in NCAA Division-I men's ice hockey this season, the Warriors improved to 8-0-1 with a 3-2 overtime victory tonight at Hockey East rival Boston University.
Freshman forward Connor Toomey scored just 22 seconds into the extra session for Merrimack, while senior goaltender Joe Cannata finished with 36 saves.
Brandon Brodhag had tied the game with less than two minutes to go in regulation after Cannata had been pulled for an extra attacker.
Last year, the Warriors finished 25-10-4 overall and advanced to both the Hockey East championship game and the NCAA Tournament.
In six years with former Boston College defenseman Dennehy at the helm, Merrimack has slowly but surely become a team to be reckoned within college hockey.
“Our goals were really raised our last two years, and we felt we could compete for championships,” said Dennehy in mid-October.
It wasn't always that way in North Andover, Mass., though.
“We originally set our sights low,” remembered Dennehy, regarding his expectations for the program when he took over in 2005-06. “It was, ‘Let’s make the playoffs.’”
