Jacksonville vs. Indianapolis: What We Learned from the Jaguars 17-3 Win
They never trailed. They never looked to be in trouble and they never broke down on defense.
And in the end, the Jacksonville Jaguars won a game they were supposed to win over their bitter rivals, the Indianapolis Colts 17-3.
While questions were answered during the day about certain developments on offense, and a defense that still looked of championship caliber, there are still many questions fans do not have answers for.
After a bye week, a win (however it is reached), is the best thing for the Jaguars, who are now 3-6 on the season.
The Colts fell to 0-10.
Rashean Mathis Has a Knee Injury
1 of 9When the veteran defensive back went down with what appeared to be a knee injury in the first half, the secondary could have collapsed. Instead, it stayed the course.
It is not known yet how severe the injury is, but Mathis, who is in the final year of his contract with the Jaguars, did not return to the game.
His potential loss is huge because he is not only a leader on the field, but a leader in the locker room as well.
The Defense Set the Tone for This Game
2 of 9They rushed the passer early and often, sometimes leading to confusion and errant passes.
You could say they did what they were taught to do.
The Jaguars had four sacks and three interceptions on the day, making Mel Tucker's scheme an effective game plan to use against any team this squad faces.
Clint Sesson Was Ready to Play
3 of 9The former Colt was licking his chops at the potential of playing his former team.
He stood up and delivered.
In other games this season where free agents played against their former teams, the outcome was not always what the Jaguars had hoped for.
This time, it was different.
Session was in pass coverage, disrupting plays or putting heat on Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky.
He played a pretty good game.
Scobee Isn't Perfect Anymore
4 of 9You knew at some point, Josh Scobee would miss a kick. You didn't figure it would be this week.
After his first attempt was good, Scobee, who was 15 for 15 on the year at that point, missed from 46 yards away. You knew he would shank it when Steve Beuerlein, a former Jaguar, said he was perfect on the season.
Karma comes back to hurt kickers, just like pitchers with no-hitters.
Maurice Jones-Drew Had Another Big Game Againt the Colts
5 of 9He ran, he caught passes, and he scored. All in a days work for MJD, who had 114 yards rushing and a touchdown. He also looked more comfortable with holding the ball and catching it out of the backfield.
A solid day all around for the star running back.
Who Is the Guy Chastin West?
6 of 9Actually who is West and Jarrett Dillard? Did Blaine Gabbert find new weapons to work with in the Jaguars passing game?
West looked fluid in catching the ball and Dillard caught the only passing touchdown of the game.
Mike Thomas, Jason Hill and Marcedes Lewis were absent in the passing game today.
The Light Went on for Gabbert in the Second Half
7 of 9Blaine Gabbert was under pressure in the first half and may have turned the corner in the second.
Gabbert looked more comfortable, threw the ball better and looked off receivers to find open targets.
He still has an issue with a downward movement in his throwing motion, but he played within himself and had a decent game to day and "led" his team to a victory.
Penalties Were Huge but Did Not Kill the Jaguars
8 of 9There were three facemask penalties on the Jags that could have blown apart momentum or given the Colts an edge.
It did not happen.
This time, the team regrouped and played better in the second half. It showed and they came away with a win.
The Browns Are Up Next Week
9 of 9The team travels to Cleveland next week to face the Browns.
This is a winnable game for this team. With a 4-6 record, they would be in the middle of the division if Tennessee loses next week.
The team still feels it can contend. It is such a long shot, but not totally dismissed.
They can hope.
