Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez: 10 Things Pac-Man Must Do to Win

Mick AkersNov 12, 2011

With 24 hours left until the highly anticipated welterweight rubber match between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, many are wondering what Pacquiao has to do to not only win, but win convincingly.

With Marquez looking as strong and big as ever, Pacquiao must stick to his game plan to ensure a convincing win.

Here are the 10 things Pacquiao must do in order to leave with his eighth win in a row, Saturday night.

1. Stay Aggressive

1 of 10

One thing that has been constant in the previous two fights between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, is that Pac-Man has been the more aggressive fighter.

Pacquiao must keep this going in their third fight and keep Marquez and his counter-punching-style on guard at all times in the fight.

2. Stay on the Move

2 of 10

Manny Pacquiao must not stay in one spot too long, as a counter puncher's chances of landing significant shots increases when the opponent is stagnant.

Look for Pacquiao to stick-and-move, get his shots in and try to get out relatively unscathed through out the fight.

The more ground covered by Pacquiao the better, as we all know Pac-Man is always in tip-top shape and will not be affected by the increased movement around the ring.

3. Pacquiao Using Size Advantage

3 of 10

Manny Pacquiao weighed in just three pounds heavier than Marquez at 143 pounds compared to 141 pounds—Juan Manuel Marquez tipped the scales at the weigh-in held today at the MGM in Las Vegas.

Expect Pacquiao to have around a five-pound weight advantage once fight time rolls around tomorrow. All though that seems like a minuscule amount, it still is enough to offer Pacquiao a slight advantage.

Pacquiao must use his slight size advantage to bully Marquez at times and make Marquez think twice about trying to get inside where he will be more comfortable against Pac-Man.

4. Utilize Power

4 of 10

As made clear in the past two fights, Manny Pacquiao has the power advantage over Juan Manuel Marquez, as he has been knocked down several times by Pacquiao.

If Pacquiao can unload a bomb like he did against Ricky Hatton, he could end this fight early just the same.

Look for Pacquiao to be aiming for a KO, as he and his trainer Freddie Roach have said on numerous occasions that Pac-Man is gunning for a knockout win on Saturday night.

5. Work Marquez's Body

5 of 10

If Manny Pacquiao wants to set up a knockout for later in the fight, he must work Juan Manuel Marquez's body throughout the fight, to open him up and slow him down in the later rounds.

Pacquiao must go to the body every round, as taking a round off from the mid-section punishment will give Marquez that much more energy on the ring, making him able to last far longer than he would with body shots every round.

6. Counter Punch the Counter Puncher

6 of 10

The best way to deal with a counter puncher is to do some counter punching of your own—something Pacquiao could do to throw Marquez's game plan off.

Frustrating Marquez by counter punching back with him will be a great way to get inside Marquez's head and have him throw caution to the wind, trying to become the aggressive one to no avail.

Giving Marquez a taste of his own medicine could be just what the doctor ordered for Pacquiao to prevail in the third installment of the action-packed trilogy between Pacquiao and Marquez.

7. Establish Jab

7 of 10

Manny Pacquiao can keep Juan Manuel Marquez at bay by establishing a stiff jab early and using it often.

Nothing deters a fighter more than eating a stern jab every time they try to move in on their opponent.

A constant jab will accumulate damage to Marquez by the middle rounds if Pacquiao uses it often, and could cause some swelling that could handicap Marquez's vision and ability to see punches coming his way.

8. Don't Be Afraid to Mix It Up

8 of 10

Pacquiao has shown that he has a pretty solid chin, especially when he faces Marquez—if Pac-Man needs to take a chance and mix it up with Marquez, Pacquiao shouldn't be too afraid of taking a shot or two to land a few himself.

Even with the added weight, it is hard to see Marquez hurting Pacquiao and taking chances to score a power punch of his own—Pacquiao should be able to take all of what Marquez has to offer in the ring.

9. Put Corner-Men Suggestions into Play

9 of 10

If for what ever reason Pacquiao seems to be having trouble in the early rounds with Marquez, Pacquiao must listen to what his corner men have to say—mainly trainer Freddie Roach—as being able to adapt is a must for any fighter looking to stay at an elite level of boxing.

Usually, when a fighter is given instruction from their corner men, they just blow it off and continue to fight the way they were, even if it is a key to succeed.

Pacquiao better be ready take constructive criticism to chance-up his game mid-fight, as ignoring a fighter's corner is usually met with bad news for the fighter.

10. Come into the Fight Focused

10 of 10

The main thing Manny Pacquiao must do in order to pull off a win on Saturday night is to come in focused and not be distracted by forces outside of the ring.

Such things as his after-fight party where he will be performing, and, of course, the ever-lingering Floyd Mayweather Jr. showdown that could happen after a Pacquiao win.

If Pacquiao comes in ready to fight—as he usually is—and not already looking past the Marquez fight, then Pacquiao should have no problem taking home a win come Saturday night.
