TNA: Did AJ Styles Just Jump Back into the Title Picture on Impact Wrestling?
I wasn't sure how to react last night after watching Impact and the "tame" promotion of the Turning Point PPV. Maybe TNA should limit its PPV events and build up more to earn more of a draw.
But what I did see on Impact was a mild build-up and a pretty good ending that allowed AJ Styles to become prominent again in the promotion.
Maybe the bitching he did through his Twitter account paid off for him and the fans.
Because of the "injury" sustained last night by James Storm that will put him out of action for six weeks, Styles suddenly became the guy who emerged as the "face" to challenge his former friend.
For TNA and its fans, this could be a good thing that helps the company get back on track.
Styles has been outspoken on his Twitter account about how the management (especially Hulk Hogan) has been keeping the TNA originals out of the title picture and how he wants to get back into main event matches.
Styles has been working a storyline with his "former" friend Christopher Daniels, who is also involved in an angle with Ron Van Dam. While we are tired of seeing Styles and Daniels again and again, Daniels and RVD has some heat to the feud and could prove to be a good thing going forward.
But where would that leave Styles
When Roode won the title last week by beating James Storm, you figured the members of Fortune would come out in mass (well, the three remaining members) and cry foul. It did not happen. Storm came out, got a return match with Roode through the inner workings of Sting and was assaulted before the match.
I wonder who did that?
Roode was every bit the "heel" last night, but his mic work of late I think is weak and he still is not believable as a villain. He needs more fire, a different look and a change from the baby face curls he wears.
OK, so a bad head of hair cannot change a person's status.
But Roode said he won the title because it was a selfishness that everyone today has. I did not believe what he was selling, leading me to believe as well that Storm would still make a better champion. He is more charismatic and more "real" in the eyes of the fans.
OK, let's get back to AJ, shall we?
Styles challenged Roode at the end of the night when he and Kazarian (why won't he ever get a world title shot?) came to the aid of Storm, who sold for Roode like we knew he would.
Whether or not the match between Roode and Styles is for the world title was not spoken of, but what happens if Styles wins a non-title match? The feud is good for the company.
Also, if somehow Daniels interferes in some way (by the way, Roode did pull a Daniels in the way he was acting last night), it could lead to a tag team of Daniels and Roode and Styles and RVD.
Makes for some interesting options for TNA to play with.
And possibly the savior of a very low-keyed and lame PPV on Sunday.
