Mike McQueary: Penn State Assistant Should Do the Right Thing and Resign

Sean MerrimanNov 12, 2011

Why is Mike McQueary still a coach at Penn State?

It has to be one of, if not the most puzzling questions in the current Penn State sexual abuse scandal. And because of it, he is becoming one of the most scrutinized individuals in this investigation, and rightfully so.

According to the grand jury report, McQueary, a former Penn State player and current wide receivers coach, testified that he saw former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky sexually assaulting a young boy in the showers in the school's football building. Instead of calling the police or doing anything in his own power to stop the horrifying sight, he left the building and made the decision to tell Joe Paterno the following day.

Of course, Paterno has taken plenty of heat for his inactions aside from speaking to AD Tim Curley and VP of FInance and Business Gary Schultz, and that is what eventually led to him being dismissed as head coach of the program. But keep in mind that Paterno did not see this first hand, McQueary did.

Forget for a minute that McQueary did not call the police after seeing this terrible incident take place—better yet, why did he not physically stop the incident from taking place? He was there and viewed first hand a young child getting sexually abused, and he chose to walk away from the situation? He didn't think to go into that room, grab the kid away or do anything in his power to make sure that there was an end put to the disgusting act before immediately contacting the authorities?

Penn State officials announced on Thursday that McQueary would not be coaching in Saturday's football game against Nebraska because of the threats that have been made against him. Just this afternoon, he was told that he would officially be placed on administrative leave.

So why doesn't he just do the right thing and call it quits?

These events are not going anywhere fast. These threats, which he has received, are not going to go away anytime soon.

Outside of Jerry Sandusky himself, there is no one in this entire situation who is more at fault than McQueary, who saw the events unfold himself and chose to do nothing about it.

For the own good of the program, himself and everyone involved in this situation, McQueary should take it upon himself to resign before this gets any worse.

Remember this...

When this story broke and Joe Paterno was fired from his coaching duty, that was not a sad day in Happy Valley. The sad day was back in 2002, when no one did anything.

Do the right thing and resign.

UPDATE: According to The Patriot-News, McQueary has told some players that he will no longer coach the team. He has not officially resigned yet.
