UFC 1 on FOX: Final Predictions

First LastNov 11, 2011

With a one-fight televised card to carry the UFC's debut on FOX, all the momentum is being put behind UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and No. 1 contender Junior dos Santos.

Both come into their fight undefeated in the UFC. The fight will be the test run for a new seven-year deal that the UFC has signed with the network television broadcasting company.

Although only one fight will be televised, the undercard will be broadcast on Facebook. It's worth taking a look at some of the more significant fights that won't make it onto TV.

These are predictions for five of the card's fights, including the main event.

No. 5: Norifumi Yamamoto vs. Darren Uyenoyama

1 of 5

Japanese standout Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto (18-4) looks to get back on the winning track when he faces UFC newcomer Darren Uyenoyama (6-3) in a bantamweight bout.

Yamamoto is one of the more complete fighters in the division, but his recent performance against Demetrious Johnson was not the type of debut he was looking for when making his first appearance in the premier mixed-martial-arts organization.

Uyenoyama had a short stint in Strikeforce, going 3-0 in the process, including two submission victories. He has fought everywhere from middleweight to bantamweight.

With Yamamoto's combination of lethal striking and wrestling ability, he shouldn't have a big problem dictating the flow and location of the fight.

The added pressure to look impressive will help "Kid" score an early stoppage win.

"Kid" Yamamoto defeats Uyenoyama by TKO in Round 1.

No. 4: Mike Pierce vs. Paul Bradley

2 of 5

In a rematch of a fight that occurred two years ago, Mike Pierce (18-3) will look to get another victory over Paul Bradley (12-4) in their welterweight matchup.

Pierce is one of the more underrated fighters in the division. His competitive yet unfavorable decision losses to Jon Fitch and Johny Hendricks have kept him from making the leap he was hoping for at this point in his career.

Bradley is a solid wrestler, but he doesn't have the ability to match "Megatron," a former NCAA Division I wrestler.

Pierce will have an advantage on his feet as well. His power should be enough for him to control his opponent and get a late stoppage or clear-cut decision.

Pierce def. Bradley by Unanimous Decision.

No. 3: Dustin Poirier vs. Pablo Garza

3 of 5

Dustin Poirier (10-1) and Pablo Garza (11-1) will each look to solidify a spot as the featherweight division's next-best contender when they meet in a highly anticipated bout this weekend.

Both bring 2-0 UFC records to the cage, though Garza has been the flashier of the two. He was able to pick up a submission of the night bonus as well as a knockout of the night bonus in both of his UFC fights.

Poirier has faced the tougher competition, defeating highly-touted contender Josh Grispi in his debut. Both of his UFC wins have come by decision.

This fight will come down to who can stay more focused for the duration. As long as Poirier can avoid the dynamic and diverse attack of his opponent, he should be able to take a decision win in a fan-friendly fight.

Poirier def. Garza by Unanimous Decision.

No. 2: Clay Guida vs. Ben Henderson

4 of 5

The next challenger for UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar may be determined in this fight. It will be up to Clay Guida (29-11) and Ben Henderson (14-2) to earn a shot while entertaining the fans in one of the more exciting bouts on the card.

Everybody saw how dominant Henderson was in his last fight against Jim Miller, who entered the bout on a seven-fight win streak. Henderson easily handled the lightweight standout for three rounds to win a decision. He also brings two victories over Donald Cerrone into the cage as well.

Guida's extensive UFC record has shown he has the ability to be competitive with the best—but not always to beat them. In his toughest fights, he has come up short, despite always putting up a good effort. Most of Guida's losses were at least awarded with a fight of the night bonus.

Unless Henderson is unable to use his size and strength to thwart Guida's relentless, grinding attack, he will probably end up on the winning end of a three-round decision.

If "Bendo" is able to utilize the same tools he used in the Miller fight, he should be able to get the better of Guida and finish him.

The advantage goes to Henderson, but this is going to be a close one.

Henderson def. Guida by Split Decision.

No. 1: Cain Velasquez vs. Junior Dos Santos

5 of 5

In a battle of two of the most evenly-matched fighters in the heavyweight division, UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (9-0) and Junior dos Santos (13-1) will introduce MMA and the UFC's heaviest division to millions of fans.

There are a lot of ways this fight could play out, but the advantage goes to the one who has already answered more of the questions—and that is Velasquez.

The former NCAA Division I wrestler has shown he can take a punch and take almost anyone down; he also has the ability to knock out his opponents on the feet. His wide array of skills, his cardio and his ability to overcome adversity will be the most important factors in this fight.

As long as he can avoid the heavy hands of Dos Santos, Velasquez should be able to get his opponent down long enough to win rounds and take a decision victory. The championship rounds will likely determine who wins this fight.

No matter how the main event between Velasquez and Junior dos Santos ends, it should be a great step in the right direction for the UFC. That's for sure.

Velasquez def. dos Santos by Unanimous Decision.
