Tom Bradley: Interim Coach Wimps out in Failing to Address Penn State Scandal

Adam WellsNov 10, 2011

All week long, the one thing that fans and analysts have asked for is someone at Penn State to speak on the record about the Jerry Sandusky scandal. The good news is that we finally heard from an insider, interim head coach Tom Bradley. The bad news is that he said absolutely nothing.

We probably shouldn't have expected Bradley to say anything. Since the investigation is still ongoing, it wasn't like he could go up there and talk about his relationship with Sandusky or anything like that. It would have been nice to hear something, though.

This whole situation is unfair to Bradley, because he is nothing more than a patsy who is being thrown to the wolves by the powers that be at Penn State. He comes off looking like a wimp and should not be put in this position.

Perhaps the most infuriating thing that Bradley said was that Mike McQueary, the assistant coach who has testified to seeing Sandusky sexually assaulting a young boy but did not alert authorities, will be coaching this Saturday when the Nittany Lions take the field against Nebraska.

Even as the interim head coach, Bradley should have some say in who is coaching the team for the rest of the season. He deserves that much, but the interim athletic director Mark Sherburne has to make the decision.

I know that there is an ongoing investigation and there is only so much that you can say, but just the way that Bradley went about his business in the press conference was not what we needed to hear.

There were times when Bradley acted oblivious, like when he was asked about the riot that took place after Joe Paterno was fired. His response to that was to say that he had heard there was some "activity."

Bradley had a chance to take a stand and satisfy our need for answers, regardless of what the question was, but he didn't do it. Yes, legally speaking, there were certain things that he could not say. But we needed more than we got.

Now we are left with the same questions that we had before Bradley even spoke. Actually, we might have more because of the fact that McQueary is still a coach for this team.
