UFC: Quit Dreaming, Anderson Silva vs. GSP Is Never Happening
The super-fight between Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre is never going to happen. MMA fans need to get that through their heads.
The bout has been in the minds of fans for quite some time and we've never had anything materialize from it. Dana White admitted in August that although he acknowledged the fans' interest in the fight, he felt Silva still has more fights at 185 lbs.
That means we are likely to see Silva stay at middleweight for at least through 2012. Fights against Chael Sonnen, Dan Henderson and Mark Munoz are all in the realm of possibility given the current situation at middleweight.
The problem with this matchup doesn't lie with Silva. He's pretty much cleaned out his division and has looked unstoppable in the process. The main issues lie with GSP and the welterweight division.
GSP's own trainer, Firas Zahabi has stated he'd rather see his fighter move down in weight than move up it. Zahabi claims that St-Pierre isn't considered a big welterweight which would mean he'd be an even smaller middleweight.
In the article on MMAConvert.com, GSP stated that he doesn't want to move down in weight because he wants to be "bigger as a man." If St-Pierre wants to be big, why would he go up in weight if he's already considered a small welterweight?
St-Pierre did leave the door open by saying if everything fell into place and the timing was right he would consider moving to a different weight class it, but doesn't feel the need to now; which is good considering the state of the welterweight division.
The welterweight title picture is very clouded at the moment. By now fans know about the Carlos Condit-Nick Diaz controversy . Diaz will fight for the title when GSP returns from injury and Condit will likely fight Josh Koscheck.
And that's not including perennial No. 2 ranked welterweight Jon Fitch, who's been clamoring for a rematch for quite some time. That list also doesn't include Jake Ellenberger, who just put himself on the map with a knockout of Jake Shields.
Even if St-Pierre were to emerge victorious through the run of challengers, we would still have to wait for the fight to come to fruition. GSP has previously stated that he would need time and would request the UFC to keep both him and Silva out of action.
With an extended absence, the UFC would likely need to either strip both men of their belts or create interim titles. Both scenarios are unlikely to happen and also likely to cause backlash from fans.
By the time St-Pierre and Silva would be ready for their mega-clash, the desire to see them fight would be nothing more than nostalgia. Fans are already asking for Silva vs. Jon Jones and it seems the days of thinking a GSP vs. Silva fight is going to happen are over.
It's about time.
