TNA/WWE/ROH: Why Can't We Bring Back the "Super Card" of Wrestling?

David LevinNov 10, 2011

A long time ago, in a wrestling world far, far away, there were three major promotions; The WWF, The NWA and The AWA.

They were great promotions and companies, each promoting their own world champion and title holders. Each having its own array of stars and each holding down a respectable part of the country as its "territory."

And while each of its owners or "promoters" used these sections of the country to bring in new talent and harvest the mainstays of the business, there were times when the "Big Three" agreed to share in the talent pool for a night or two to show fans across the country what they were missing by just supporting one cross-section of Americana.

Remember, this is before cable television or the popularity of the USA Network.

So, in order to promote great matches, they had "Super Cards" where many great superstars would headline a night of wrestling.

"Superstar" Billy Graham vs. Dusty Rhodes.

Nick Bockwinkle vs. Ric Flair.

Mr. Fuji vs. Jack Brisco.

You get the idea.

And thousands of wrestling fans would line the arenas to see these stars compete, most of the time to 60-minute "Broadways" or draws. The idea was to show that each brand was just as powerful as the other and to keep all the fans wanting more.

So, what happened to that concept? Where did it go? Can it be revived?

The three major brands of today, WWE, TNA and ROH, all have heroes and heels fans follow. There not as much of the watered down concept of wrestling because all three companies are overflowing with talent or "professionals" and there is not enough air time to showcase everyone. At least back in the 1970s and 80s, there were enough promotions to spread the wealth, if not water it down.

Wouldn't it be great to see someone like Shelton Benjamin lock horns with a Bobby Roode or a Roderick Strong take on Christian?

How about Beer Money vs. The Briscoes?

Davey Richards vs. John Cena?

You get the idea again, I am sure.

Instead of having these "Super Shows" the "Super Card" makes more sense not only to the fans but the wrestling genre.

Fans want to see who the best is. Don't the owners and promoters want to give them that?
