Pacquiao vs. Marquez 3: HBO's 24/7 Provides Incredible in-Depth Look in the Life
The epic series, HBO 24/7: Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez sheds light into the anguish that Marquez goes through since his two fights against Pacquiao—the first fight was a draw and the other was a Pacquiao split decision.
The fight—and series—is all about two boxers with two different lifestyles, all because of two decisions. Primarily the second decision in their last fight. While Pacquiao has a luxurious lifestyle in America and the Philippines, Marquez sticks in his home country of Mexico, with his tight knit family.
Marquez even admitted in an interview that he feels that if the second fight would have gone differently—with him getting the decision not Pacquiao—his life would have been like Pacquiao's. What he means is that he could be known as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world and that his life would have him as a transcendent figure in Mexico and America.
Instead, Marquez has to live with the thought that he cannot get past Pacquiao, who he calls “a thorn” in his side.
Marquez is still as respected of a figure in his home country, as Pacquiao is in his home country of the Philippines. Unlike Pacquiao though, Marquez is not running for political office and isn’t the face of his country. But, just like Pacquiao, any time Marquez goes out for a meal, or with his family, he is known by his fellow countrymen.
In fact if Marquez was not known as the famous boxer, he would be known for his television work on ESPN Deportes “Golpe A Golpe” (“Pound for Pound”).
Juan Manuel Marquez does not have the same entrance when he arrives in American airports like Pacquiao. He doesn’t have the same Twitter followers as Pacquiao. Marquez doesn’t even have a Twitter account, or anything that would help him connect to his fans like Pacquiao does.
The life of Marquez is depicted as one that is quiet, but tough. It seems as if he does not demand the limelight like Pacquiao does.
It looks as if Juan Manuel Marquez has two missions in his life right now. One is to make sure his wife and kids are taken care of. And two, that he has to beat Manny Pacquiao in their third fight.
If he doesn’t, it will live with him as that thorn in his side for the rest of his life.
