Jerry Sandusky Sex Scandal Sadly Isn't New in Sports

Adam WellsNov 9, 2011

When the Jerry Sandusky scandal broke and you heard all the allegations levied against him, there was immediate outrage and backlash from every possible avenue. There should be, because, if what has been said is true, this is one of the most despicable and horrific incidents that most of us have seen.

What makes things worse is that this is not the first time that something like this has happened in sports. On the contrary, these things happen a lot more than we hear about.

The difference is the Sandusky scandal is taking place at one of the biggest college football programs in the country, while others have taken place at lower-level universities or with sports that don't get as much attention as football.

That does not excuse the other scandals, it is just pointing out that the bigger following the program or team has, the more coverage it is going to get.

Michelle Malkin, who is a syndicated columnist and contributor to Fox News Channel, wrote an article in which she talks about other recent incidents of coaches in other sports sexually abusing children.

There is a horrific story Malkin highlights about the owner of a gymnastics club who was forced to sell the business after hiring a coach who was accused "of physical and sexual abuse of underage female gymnasts."

Then there is an ABC News report from last year in which "36 swimming coaches have been banned for life by the USA Swimming organization over the last decade because of sexual misconduct."

"

One coach, Brian Hindson of Kokomo, IN, secretly taped teenage girls he coached in two high school pool locker rooms, one in which he directed girls to a "special" shower room where he had a hidden camera inside a locker.

"

The Jerry Sandusky allegations are just the tip of the iceberg. There are stories of sexual misconduct and abuse that come out all the time.

Each one of them is as disgusting and disturbing as the next, and it makes you think that Matt Millen was right when he broke down on SportsCenter yesterday wondering what has happened to the days when coaches were supposed to be teachers and help mold young minds.

Is the answer just as simple as not giving these coaches any alone time with these children? While I do think that would help, that is basically like giving an adult a babysitter. When the adults are more likely to do something wrong than the child, you know there is a problem.

Parents could start talking to these coaches more. I mean these are going to have an influence on the way that these kids are raised, so why wouldn't a parent want to learn all the information that they possibly can before entrusting their own flesh and blood to someone else.

Maybe there is no answer. Maybe there are just sick people in the world that want to hurt kids and ruin their lives forever. I would like to believe that isn't true, but the evidence is there for you to look at.
