UFC on FOX: 7 Things We Do NOT Want to See Happen on UFC on FOX

Matt SaccaroNov 9, 2011

There are things fans want to see at UFC on FOX, but there are also things fans definitely do not want to see.

November 12th marks the UFC's debut on the FOX network and, if the right things happen, the UFC can be catapulted to the next level of popularity; UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and challenger Junior dos Santos can become household names.

However, if the wrong things happen, the UFC will fall flat on its face and may well be doomed to forever remain a fringe sport.

These wrong things are the things that MMA fans (both new and old) do not want happening.

What are they? Read and find out!

A Draw

1 of 7

A draw is the most unsatisfying way a fight can end, especially a high-profile title fight like Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos.

Remember how disappointed you were when Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard II was declared a draw? Multiply that by 50 and then consider that UFC on FOX will be the first time many fans will watch MMA.

How will they feel about a disappointing draw?

A Disqualification/Unsportsmanlike Conduct

2 of 7

A disqualification would portray MMA fighters badly and would immensely disappoint viewers. Even worse, a post-fight scuffle like the one between Paul Daley and Josh Koscheck (or the one between Jason "Mayhem" Miller and the entirety of Caesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu) would ruin the UFC.

However, Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos have clean track records and are true sportsmen and gentlemen. A disqualification shouldn't be a problem.

A 10-Second Knockout

3 of 7

MMA aficionados may not be bothered by a quick fight, but new fans may be put off.

A quick knockout (less than a minute) might leave potential MMA fans underwhelmed. How can they get hyped up about MMA if the supposed biggest fight of the year lasts for such a short amount of time?

Also, a fight that's over so quickly won't be able to showcase the different aspects of MMA for new fans, which is another reason why it wouldn't be a good thing.

A Late/Early Stoppage

4 of 7

If the fight is stopped too early or too late, it would be bad.

Too early, and new viewers and fans alike will be aggravated. Too late, and the UFC will have difficulty getting rid of it's "human cockfighting" stigma.

Imagine what the anti-MMA press would say if they saw the unconscious body of Cain Velasquez or Junior dos Santos being needlessly pummeled!

A Bloodbath

5 of 7

Mixed martial arts in the United States already has image problems amongst the uneducated; they still believe it to be the no-rules "human cockfights" of the early 1990s.

A fight where either Cain Velasquez or Junior dos Santos (or both) spill buckets of blood wouldn't do much to dispel this image amongst first-time viewers.

When it comes to this fight, the less blood, the better.

A Gruesome Knockout

6 of 7

As mentioned in the last slide, the public perception of MMA isn't of the world's purest sport, but rather a bloody, no-holds barred tough-man contest.

If Cain Velasquez or Junior dos Santos suffer a brutal knockout that sees them starched and with limbs convulsing, it will set the sport back years.

A Boring Fight

7 of 7

Of all the things that could hurt the UFC and could limit the amount of fans created by UFC on FOX, a boring fight may be the worst of all.

If the fight between Velasquez and Dos Santos turns into a staring contest or a "lay and pray" fest, then MMA's growth will be dramatically slowed and its perception amongst the general public may never recover.

"Who wants to watch a bunch of guys hugging or rolling around?" would be the common criticism of MMA.

What a sad world it would be if this, or any other of the events discussed, happened on FOX and severely damaged (if not ruined) the credibility and growth potential of the UFC and MMA as a whole.
