Best and Worst College Football TV Announcers
Best
Todd Blackledge
My favorite color commentator. Likable. Knowledgeable. Knows when to talk and when not to. Came up with the favorite local restaurant bit.
Verne Lundquist
My favorite play-by-play announcer. Perfect voice. Likable guy. Doesn't pretend to know stuff he doesn't know. I'd pay money to see him reunited with Todd Blackledge.
Chris Fowler
Probably the best technical play-by-play announcer. Knows football. Knows college football. Great voice. Smart guy. Never misses a beat.
Kirk Herbstreit
Good broadcaster. I'll forgive him for being a pretty boy.
Brad Nessler/Bob Griese
These two guys should get more work. Both excellent.
Average
Jesse Palmer
Another pretty boy—a poor man's Herbstreit. I'll give him a pass for being a Gator.
Doug Flutie
Solid but dull.
Craig James
Solid but dull.
Lou Holtz
I'm not in the large, vocal "Hate Holtz" camp. I actually appreciate him for being a character who stays outside the cookie cutter. But it's probably time for Lou to move on.
Mark May
Good analyst, but wrapped too tight. Doesn't exude enough personality.
Worst
Mike Patrick
Who hired this guy? He's doesn't know squat but constantly steps on Blackledge's toes with his own inaccurate, bombastic in-game analysis. He looks and sounds just plain weird. Look at it this way: Imagine almost any embarrassing tabloid headline. Would you be surprised to see Mike Patrick's name in it?
Gary Danielson
Whiny. Talks too much, but says little. He's gotten so irritating to me, I am actually watching the games with my thumb on the mute button.
Brent Musburger
Never liked this guy. Corny, insincere hype artist. Now being hailed as a "legend." Listen, guys, broadcasting isn't important enough to have "legends," and if it were, Musburger sure isn't one of them. "Mountain Man vs. The Franchise?" Please.
