Detroit Lions vs. Chicago Bears More Than "Just Another Game" for the Lions

Brandon LeopoldNov 9, 2011

"It's only a game."

That's the old adage that manages to float around when it comes to sports. In almost every interview, every press release, every coaches' press conference, the same four words are bandied about.

"It's only a game."

If not, then you hear that they're going to treat each matchup as "just another game."

For the Detroit Lions this season, however, it's more than "just another game."

Let's take a look at why this upcoming encounter with the Chicago Bears is so important for Detroit.

Firstly, the Lions got swept by the Bears last season. Forget that they lost one game by a controversial call in which Calvin Johnson didn't—well, you know. That loss started a quick four-game losing streak. The reason that stung so much was because we knew we were a better team than Chicago.

Secondly, the Bears are coming in hot so far. They're currently on a three-game winning streak. Their last loss, in fact, was on Monday Night Football against the Lions.

Thirdly, much like the old MetroDome in Minnesota, Soldier Field in Chicago has been a perennial house of horrors for the Lions. I honestly don't remember the last time the Lions won a meaningful game at Soldier Field.

Finally, the Lions are primed to make a playoff run this season. I know it's only November, but the Lions are finally playing meaningful games. They're at 6-2, not 2-6. Furthermore, this 6-2 Lions team is much better than the 2007 6-2 team under Rod Marinelli. The coaching staff is better, too.

As we enter the second half of the season, there's no more room for excuses. The Lions must win the games they need to win, starting on Sunday against the Bears in Chicago.

For the Lions, this is more than "just another game."
