Pacquiao vs. Marquez: Is Superfight off If Manny Pacquiao Loses?
If it's 2055, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao can barely walk, if they haven't gone toe-to-toe in the ring yet, people will still be clamoring for it to happen. Win, lose or draw vs. Marquez, Pacquiao won't deter the boxing world from his superfight with Mayweather.
We've been waiting for Mayweather vs. Pacquiao since Manny Pacquiao defeated Miguel Cotto in November of 2009. The fighters routinely build our hopes up and then take the fight off the table like it's some sort of cruel joke.
The window for this fight happening is closing, but the hype surrounding it won't die off. Those who think Pacquiao vs. Mayweather wouldn't captivate the nation if Pacquiao were handed a loss at the hands of Marquez are mistaken.
This theoretical superfight has the entire world enamored. It's the one we've all been dying to see for years now. Mayweather could have been knocked out cold by Victor Cruz in the first round and Pacquiao could suffer the same fate in his upcoming fight against Marquez, but there is no matchup in boxing that people would want to see more.
They are the two biggest names in boxing. Mayweather remains one of the most polarizing figures in sports. Pacquiao has risen to super stardom and is now one of the sports' most recognizable figures.
Klitschko vs. Haye had a decent buildup. There have been a number of pound for pound fights that have done considerably well, as Pacquiao vs. Marquez III will.
Even so, Mayweather vs. Pacquiao is the sort of fight you can't write the history of boxing without including. It's legendary.
Would a loss to Marquez take away from the fight? Potentially.
Would it shut it down completely? No way.
