Why a John Cena Heel Turn Shouldn't Happen Any Time Soon

Tyson JonesNov 8, 2011

How many articles on this site say "now is the perfect time to turn Cena heel?" More importantly, why do we keep trying to predict it?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't we love unpredictability? Don't we hate when WWE becomes too predictable? Irony in all this is that the IWC is more predictable than the WWE product.

Now, on to my question—what will people do if Cena doesn't turn heel? Will you get upset and not watch RAW anymore because WWE missed "the perfect opportunity"? Or will you do what you've done every time this discussion comes up and sit, wait and maybe hope another chance like this comes up, only to realize THIS will be the perfect chance.

Really, it's almost as annoying as all the articles on how Punk turned crap into gold and should have his own show. Speaking of which, though, it brings me to another point. A lot of people are saying now is the time to turn Cena heel because CM Punk sells more merchandise.

What seems to be skipping the mind of a lot of people is that John Cena does more than just sell merch. John Cena is the perfect man when it comes to public relations and branching into the mainstream. CM Punk rarely ever does anything outside of wrestling. John Cena is asked for by the Make a Wish Foundation so much it's insane.

Wrestling fans love Punk. We get that. That said, think about it from a logic standpoint. Your company is PG. CM Punk is known for blasting people at house shows and speaking his mind. Admirable from a human standpoint. A liability from a logical standpoint. Not to mention, as much as it sucks, many of the statements made about Punk are correct. He doesn't look like a champion. He kind of does look like a fast-food cook. That's good in wrestling. Makes him different. Not so much when it comes to the face of a company.

Now lets look at John Cena. A modern day Hulk Hogan for this generation. His "vitamins and prayers" are Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect. Honestly, in the past few years it's hard to find a bad thing said about Cena from a public relations point of view. He's clean-cut, he's ripped, and children love him. Why on earth would you have anyone else the face of your company when you're trying to get people to view you as a respectable corporation and not just a wrestling promotion.

Why would you possibly want to jeopardize good main-stream press by turning such a public relations god like Cena heel. You think Orton, Punk, or anyone else could do what John Cena does for the WWE outside of the ropes? I certainly don't, and if Vince is smart, he won't.

Besides, what is the point of having a heel John Cena. He'll still be used as a Superman. He'll just bury faces instead of heels, which is bad for business when WWE has a shortage of main-event faces. (Orton, Sheamus, Cena, and Punk are the only four at this point. Big Show is debatable.) We have far too many heels like Henry, Del Rio, Miz, Truth, Christian, with Cody Rhodes, Wade Barrett, and Dolph Ziggler potentially one feud away from stepping up.

So what'll change? We'll you can say goodbye to any push for Zack Ryder, John Morrison, and potentially Sheamus. (Wow, we have three faces on the rise. That's great booking...) So where is the logic in turning Cena heel?

Point being, now is not the right time to turn Cena heel, and it won't be for a long time. Stop shooting yourself in the foot and trying to predict it, before turning around and moaning that the product is predictable.
