Penn State Scandal Guarantees Drastic Changes Must Be Made
Penn State will never be the same. It sounds obvious but it needs to sink in before we grasp what that means. Okay, that was enough time now let's continue.
Every last person who was in power and had some semblance of what was going on needs to be dismissed. A university that claimed to be honorable needs to distance themselves with publicly dishonorable people.
From the top down, a giant eraser needs to sweep across the illustrious board that is Penn State's history since Jerry Sandusky descended upon Happy Valley.
President Graham Spanier, normally a gabby person, has been silent amidst the biggest scandal to rock any college. The San Francisco Chronicle reports a very real effort is being posed to get Spanier out of Dodge. I have to agree.
There has to be a reason for the police never being called despite the multiple allegations and rumors that were floating around. That same sentiment is applied to Joe Paterno, the second most powerful man in Happy Valley.
Paterno would know what each and every player on his team was doing. The man prided himself on running a tight ship. It seems that assurance did not extend to a buddy who may be raping kids in the shower.
Upon hearing such a thing, Paterno should have got up and said, "not on my (expletive deleted) campus." Like a sheriff with a big stick he would have approached the police himself. At least, that was the image I had of Paterno, a man that never took any guff.
It seems he allows a lot more than guff to go on. Penn State was the prized jewel of collegiate sports. Those guys just couldn't be stained.
That image may forever be tarnished, but if there is hope, it only comes about after the old regime is gone. The healing can only begin once the failures are fired or forced to retire.
I never thought I would think this, but Penn State deserves a lot better than Joe Paterno.
