Pacquiao vs Marquez: 3 Keys for a Juan Marquez Upset
Juan Manuel Marquez can beat Manny Pacquiao in their third bout, but the seasoned fighter must be very patient.
The two fought to a draw in 2004 and a split decision in 2008, so clearly Marquez's style is problematic for the Filipino legend.
The 38-year-old Marquez has a small window of opportunity. Pacquiao is younger, faster and more talented.
If Marquez can do these three things, he may be able to upset the world's best pound-for-pound fighter.
Withstand the Early Barrage
Pacquiao's game plan is to attack, attack, attack. He'll be throwing bombs early and often in an attempt to overwhelm Marquez.
In their first match, Marquez hit the canvas three times in the first round. He was able to survive the early onslaught and fight his way to a draw. It wasn't ideal, but it was definitely better than a loss.
Once again, Pacquiao will bring the heat in the early minutes of this fight. He will be going for the kill as soon as he smells blood, which will likely come after the first bell.
If Marquez can withstand Pacquiao's fury in the first few rounds, he will be in great shape.
Counter Punch, Counter Punch, Counter Punch
Fight promoter Bob Arum says Marquez is probably the best counter puncher in the world.
I would certainly disagree.
Admittedly, Arum has way more experience with boxers than myself, but Floyd Mayweather is unquestionably the best counter puncher in the world.
That said, Marquez's technique is nearly flawless. As long as he can avoid the brunt of Pacquiao's blows, he will be able to seriously hurt him with the counter punch.
Capitalize on Pacquiao's Aggression
As I said earlier, Pacquiao will be relentlessly attacking.
Marquez needs to keep a cool head and respond appropriately to Pacquiao's aggression.
If he tries to brawl with Pacquiao, he will be knocked out within the first few rounds. If he is patient and uses his defensive ability to counter Pacquiao's offense, he just might come out with the victory.
