Penn State Football: Who Will Leave and Who Is Left to Poach?
Penn State football will likely lose a significant portion of Joe Paterno's recruiting class in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex scandal. With one top recruit already tweeting his unlikely association with the program, who else will leave or be vulnerable to the pleas of rival coaches?
Five-star defensive end recruit Noah Spence expressed his thoughts on joining Penn State via Twitter:
Spence is a game-changing defensive end considering Penn State and being recruited by Larry Johnson, according to rivals.com's profile of Spence. Are the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania native's tweets indicative of the temperature of most recruits who are committed to or considering Penn State?
If so, the Nittany Lions look to lose a significant amount of talent in this class. According to the commitment list at rivals.com, Penn State currently has 16 recruits slated to join the team in Happy Valley in 2012.
Paterno and his staff already netted commitments from five four-star prospects who would be crucial to Penn State's ability to compete in the Big Ten. Those recruits include wide receiver Eugene Lewis along with defensive standouts Armani Reeves, Tommy Schutt, Brent Wilkerson and Camren Williams.
It's safe to assume that rival coaches will be working overtime to poach these recruits, many of whom can play anywhere in the country. It's most likely, however, that they'll leave for other Big Ten schools. The recruiting loss becomes a double-whammy, at that point.
What will happen over the next few days?
There is a high likelihood that there will be a new coach in State College in 2012. Will he be hired fast enough to save this class or is the damage irreparable?
