Penn State Scandal: Urban Meyer Would Rescue Tainted PSU Program
The Penn State Nittany Lions are in a world of hurt right now, dealing with one of the biggest scandals in sports history, as well as the possibility of having to look for a new coach, but landing Urban Meyer will certainly heal some wounds.
According to Pete Thamel and Mark Viera of the The New York Times, it appears that Joe Paterno will no longer be the head coach at Penn State.
There's been no official word from Paterno himself, but given everything that has occurred and the massive public outcry, Paterno's days are numbered.
Former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky allegedly used the charity program, Second Mile, as a cover to molest young children, and a witness saw these crimes happen in the Penn State locker room.
In 2002, a graduate assistant saw Sandusky molesting a child in the showers, but he chose to pass the information to Penn State officials instead of calling the police.
Paterno didn't report the incident to police either, but rather told his superiors.
He is fine with the law, but there are some big moral issues if indeed Paterno knew everything the graduate assistant saw and didn't react better.
Since it looks as though the Paterno-era will be over, the Nittany Lions will soon be looking for a new head coach.
It won't be easy replacing a legend, but hiring a big name coach will solve a lot of problems.
Penn State's top recruits need to know they will be in good hands if Paterno is out, and there is no better way to reassure them that things will be fine than by hiring Meyer.
Once the news broke about Paterno being let go, it didn't take long for the Meyer-to-Penn State thoughts to happen, especially on Twitter.
Of course, Meyer's name has been tossed around for a lot of head coaching jobs.
When you've had a ton of success like him, it's easy for people to state he'd be a perfect fit for a head coaching vacancy.
CNBC's Darren Rovell decided to have a little fun with that on Twitter.
There is no doubt that Meyer could be successful at Penn State.
The reality of it is that the man could win no matter where goes. Kids are going to want to play for him because of his impressive résumé.
But would Meyer actually want to coach at Penn State?
Following up a legend is no easy task, plus, this Sandusky scandal makes matters worse.
Meyer could have any job he wants to, and because of that, I honestly don't think he would head to Penn State.
Would he help the program?
Absolutely.
However, this is a very messy situation at Penn State, and even Meyer's large ego won't want to be apart of cleaning it all up.
