Manny Pacquiao: Why Pacquiao Doesn't Deserve Fight with Mayweather
For so long, Floyd Mayweather has been painted as the main villain preventing a fight with Manny Pacquiao. The thing is, Pac-Man is no saint either; but he has gotten off the hook.
More than once, Pacquiao has said he wants to fight. But when it comes down to brass tacks, each side has failed to do what it takes to get a deal done while fighting for the upper hand. Now, neither Pacquiao or Mayweather deserves this fight despite the public clamor for the bout that could save boxing.
The reality is that Pacquiao has ducked this fight just as much as Mayweather has—he just hasn't been nearly as vocal about that. When Mayweather's camp threw the gauntlet down last week, saying an arena and date was picked for a fight between the two titans of boxing, Pacquiao's camp responded by calling it a sick joke.
For a man who took on the Marquez fight before he had even finished with his bout at the time, it was just another chapter in the long tome of media posturing that has consumed what would be a great match. Fans have grown weary of the constant bickering; and while the sport's purists are dying to see the bout, neither man deserves the glory that comes with it—and that includes Pacquiao.
This is a fight that should have happened years ago, and these two men have let their egos, money and blood tests get in the way from something that could have given the sport new energy. Pacquiao has continued to dominate his opponents—some of whom had no business being in the same ring as him—refusing to do whatever it takes to get a deal done with Mayweather.
Plenty of blame lays at Mayweather's feet as well; but Pacquiao cannot be absolved for not getting a deal done as well. None of his opponents have come close to the caliber of the loud-mouthed pugilist and it's insulting to charge fans large sums to watch him beat up on tomato cans.
When Pacquiao gets past Marquez for the third time, he'll sit down and posture with Mayweather once more, and we might even see a deal get done. The only problem is, neither man will deserve it. But Pacquiao won't be looked at in the same light as Mayweather, and that's a shame.
