English Premier League Power Rankings: Week 11

Joe TanseyNov 8, 2011

This week in the Premier League, the top five teams all continued their dominance with wins while sixth place Liverpool were held to a draw by newcomers Swansea.

Down at the bottom of the table, Wolves took down Wigan in a relegation battle while Bolton finally got off their losing skid as they avenged their FA Cup semifinal loss last year to Stoke and destroyed them by five goals.

Fulham and Everton continued their losing ways and fell closer to the relegation zone as managers Martin Jol and David Moyes look to find some positive momentum to get their teams going.

As always, last week's ranking is in parenthesis.

20. Wigan (20)

1 of 20

Wigan continued their spell at the bottom of the table with a 3-1 loss to Wolves.

Ben Watson scored a 42nd-minute equalizer, but the defense gave up two more goals in the club's eighth loss of the season.

19. Blackburn (17)

2 of 20

Blackburn were handed their third shutout of the season, this one by Chelsea at Ewood Park on Saturday.

Steve Kean and company will now look forward to a huge relegation battle with Wigan in two weeks.

18. Fulham (14)

3 of 20

Fulham were handed a cruel loss to London neighbors Tottenham on Sunday.

The Cottagers fell 3-1 in a game where they had numerous chances but they could find the back of the net as a Younes Kaboul own goal put them on the scoreboard in the 57th minute.

17. Everton (11)

4 of 20

Everton were unable to finish a comeback at St. James' Park on Saturday and lost to red hot Newcastle, 2-1.

New England call-up Jack Rodwell scored in the 45th minute for the struggling Toffees.

David Moyes and company fell down to 17th in the table after the loss.

16. Stoke (15)

5 of 20

Stoke suffered their worst loss of the season at the hands of Bolton on Sunday.

The Potters now have a two-week break after having a crowded fixture list over the past few weeks with the Carling Cup, Europa League and Premier League.

Two home matches nine days apart against QPR and Blackburn will round out November for Tony Pulis' club.

15. Bolton (19)

6 of 20

Bolton took out their frustration from a rough start to the season out on Stoke on Sunday as the Trotters repaid their opponents for their 5-0 loss last season in the FA Cup semifinal.

Chris Eagles and Ivan Klasnic both scored twice while Kevin Davies scored the opener as Bolton reversed the score from last season's cup match.

Owen Coyle may have saved his job for now with the win but the Trotters have to win more and dig themselves out of the relegation zone for Coyle to stay with the club through the season.

14. Wolverhampton (18)

7 of 20

Wolves leaped up to 13th place in the table after an easy 3-1 win over Wigan.

Jamie O'Hara, David Edwards and Stephen Ward all scored in the win at home on Sunday.

Visits to Goodison Park and Stamford Bridge are up next after the international break for Wolves.

13. West Brom (13)

8 of 20

West Brom's road trip to the Emirates Stadium was not a pleasant one as the Baggies were downed, 3-0.

The loss did hurt the Baggies' position in the table a little bit as they dropped to 14th place with 11 points.

Roy Hodgson's club have been held scoreless for the past 180 minutes of game time and will look to get back on the scoresheet against Bolton at home in two weeks.

12. Swansea City (16)

9 of 20

Swansea followed in the footsteps of fellow newcomers Norwich and marched into Anfield and came out with a point.

The Swans forced a goal-less draw with Liverpool on Saturday as goalkeeper Michael Vorm notched his second straight shutout against Liverpool, he shut them out with Utrecht in the Europa League last season.

11. Queens Park Rangers (12)

10 of 20

QPR came a goal short of earning a point against Manchester City at home on Saturday.

Jay Bothroyd and Heidar Helguson scored goals for QPR in their 3-2 loss at Loftus Road.

The loss actually boosted their position in the table as Stoke fell behind the 11th-place club on goal differential.

10. Sunderland (10)

11 of 20

Sunderland dropped a close one at Old Trafford on Saturday by the score of 1-0.

Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown scored an own goal for the Black Cats in the loss that dropped them down to 15th place in the table.

9. Norwich City (7)

12 of 20

Grant Holt was not up for a third straight at the death goal for Norwich as the Canaries lost to Aston Villa, 3-2.

Anthony Pilkington scored the opener and then Steve Morison equalized before Villa took the lead for good.

The Canaries have now scored nine goals in their last four games after being shutout by Manchester United in early October.

8. Liverpool (5)

13 of 20

Liverpool dropped points to a newly promoted side again as the Reds put up a goose egg in their draw with Swansea.

The draw puts the Reds three points behind fifth-place Tottenham ahead of a tough stretch of games against Chelsea and Manchester City.

7. Chelsea (9)

14 of 20

Frank Lampard delivered a win for Chelsea at Ewood Park on Saturday with a 51st-minute goal.

The goal was the sixth for the England midfielder who leads the club in goals this season.

After the international break, the Blues will host Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

6. Aston Villa (8)

15 of 20

Darren Bent buried home two goals in Aston Villa's 3-2 home win over Norwich City on Saturday.

Bent found the back of the net in the 30th and 62nd minute while Gabriel Agbonlahor added his fifth goal of the season in the 48th minute.

The Villains play Tottenham on the Monday after the international break in a matchup of clubs trying to clinch the Europa League berth at the end of the season.

5. Manchester United (6)

16 of 20

Manchester United were the beneficiaries of a Wes Brown own goal against Sunderland.

The Brown own goal gave United a 1-0 win at Old Trafford to celebrate Sir Alex Ferguson's 25 years in charge of the club.

The Red Devils have rebounded slowly after their loss to rivals Manchester City with two unimpressive 1-0 wins over Everton and Sunderland.

4. Arsenal (4)

17 of 20

Arsenal cruised to a 3-0 victory over West Brom at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Robin van Persie continued his amazing form with his 11th goal of the season while Thomas Vermaelen and Mikel Arteta also scored a goal in the win.

The Gunners are now up to seventh in the table after their early-season slide and are carrying a four-game winning streak into the international break.

3. Newcastle (3)

18 of 20

Newcastle remained unbeaten as they took down Everton on Saturday.

Ryan Taylor scored the winner in the 29th minute for the Magpies in their 2-1 home win.

Alan Pardew and company will now get to prove their worth at the top of the table as they have two visits to Manchester in two successive weeks followed by a home match with Chelsea in their next three Premier League games.

2. Tottenham (2)

19 of 20

Tottenham won their London derby match with Fulham on Sunday 3-1 at Craven Cottage.

Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon and Jermain Defoe were the goal scorers while Brad Friedel had an All-Star performance in goal as Fulham peppered the Spurs goal all game.

Monday night football awaits the fifth-placed Spurs after the international break when they host Aston Villa at White Hart Lane.

1. Manchester City (1)

20 of 20

Manchester City held off a resilient QPR squad on Saturday with a 3-2 win on the road in London.

Edin Dzeko and David Silva scored before Yaya Toure notched the winner in the 74th minute for the Citizens.

City go into the international break with a comfortable lead in the table over rivals Manchester United as they have a five-point lead over United.
