Penn State Scandal: Matt Millen Crying on ESPN Puts Scandal into Perspective

Ryan RudnanskyNov 8, 2011

As the Penn State scandal continues to unfold, more PSU graduates are coming forth to speak about the allegations of sexual abuse concerning former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

After PSU grad and YES Network Yankees reporter Kim Jones blasted the university on WFAN on Monday, former Penn State All-American defensive tackle Matt Millen appeared on SportsCenter on Tuesday.

Back in 1977, when Millen was a player for the Nittany Lions, Sandusky asked Millen about his thoughts on starting a program for troubled youths. Like most at the school, Millen thought it a great idea. Little did he know that these same youths would be targets of Sandusky's alleged sexual abuse.

Said Millen on SportsCenter, "It's a shame...it sickens you...it really makes me angry."

Millen also said, via WEEI Boston:

"

"This is about people. And if we can't protect our kids, we, as a society, are pathetic."

"

There were also reports that head coach Joe Paterno was alerted to an incident in 2002 in which current receivers coach Mike McQueary witnessed Sandusky performing anal sex on a 10-year-old boy in one of the facilities' locker room showers.

Asked if Paterno had a moral responsibility to go to the police after telling university administrators of the matter, Millen said:

"

"I think anybody would. Forget that he's a head coach. As a person, if you're confronted with that stuff, I think that's your responsibility."

"

While the rest of America stands in shock, there is no one more shocked than some of the graduates of Penn State, which was considered one of the most upstanding schools in the country before the scandal broke.

It appears as if Penn State was excellent at keeping a secret, locking the scandal behind administration's closed doors.

The scandal not only destroyed youths' lives, it also taints graduates of the university, who believed they were part of something special when in reality something horrific was going on right underneath their noses.

This scandal hurts so many people in so many ways.

All because Penn State administrators and Paterno allowed a monster to roam their campus and consequently became monsters themselves.
