Floyd Mayweather Should Jump in the Ring Saturday and Call out Manny Pacquiao
With the recent buzz generated by the other most famous and lucrative star in boxing, Floyd Mayweather recently stated that he intends to fight Manny Pacquiao on May 5th, 2012.
Many fight fans were excited to hear this but just as many fans doubted it—we have seen this same song and dance several times without any satisfactory results.
Some including Top Rank CEO Bob Arum feel Mayweather is doing this strictly for publicity reasons just to steal the thunder from Manny Pacquiao, who has all eyes on him this week as he prepares to fight his "inside the ring" nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez—for the third time—this Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Unless we are Floyd Mayweather Jr. himself there really is no way to determine how sincere he is about fighting Manny Pacquiao on Cinco De Mayo 2012.
There are hundreds of other variables that would hinder or even block the biggest fight of our lifetime from happening on that date—or from ever happening at all.
But it seems that the vast majority of the general public outside of Mayweather's most loyal hardcore obsessed fans do view Floyd as being scared to fight Manny Pacquiao.
People from certain reporters at ESPN to comedians such as Daniel Tosh have made it clear that they feel Mayweather is scared to fight Pacquiao.
This week the world lost one of the greatest heavyweight champions of all time in Smokin' Joe Frazier. Right after news broke of Frazier's death he was trending worldwide on Twitter as thousands of fans showed their condolences and admiration.
But just as many were mourning the legend that night, the top retweeted tweet about him was from a user name Alvin Louis who said (verbatim):
"Alvin_Louis RIP Joe Frazier. He never ducked the big fights. *cough*@FloydMayweather*cough*
"
That this was the top retweeted tweet suggests most people on Twitter at that time either agreed with it or thought it was funny.
Did Mayweather see himself in this top tweet that night? One may assume so for he ended up blocking Alvin from following him on Twitter shortly after.
So where am I going with all of this?
The point I'm trying to make is that we live in a short attention span society where we now believe what we want to believe—and it's usually based on a quick sound bite or photo no matter how it is altered/edited/or even photo-shopped.
We usually don't take time to read between the lines or analyze things thoroughly, so if Floyd Mayweather were to really prove or at least give the impression that he is serious about fighting Manny Pacquiao in 2012, then he needs to jump inside that ring Saturday night after the Pacquiao/Marquez III fight and call out Manny to his face.
If Floyd were to get in the ring and interrupt the celebration and post-fight interviews with Larry Merchant or Max Kellerman (just as Shane Mosley did when he defeated Marquez), then the vast majority of the public who think he is scared will be won over.
Yes it will be a very bold statement if Floyd were to do such a powerful publicity stunt.
To be honest it would not even matter if he was indeed truly scared to fight Pacquiao or not, because jumping in the ring and calling out Pacquiao to his face would provide a sound bite and image that would shake up the boxing world.
The vast majority of our short attention span society that does not read between the lines will view this stunt as a big media win for Mayweather and give him the upper hand in proving that he means business for May 5th, 2012.
Even if that fight never happens this stunt will win over a lot of his haters and doubters because that's what works in today's society.
Will Floyd Mayweather actually do this Saturday night? Probably not.
Floyd was often seen at Pacquiao's earlier fights sitting ringside as a cheering fan when he knocked out Erik Morales at the lower weight classes. But ever since Manny started moving up in weight and coming in closer and closer to Floyd's territory, he stopped attending his fights.
The most common response when the media asks if Floyd sees any fight these days is something to the degree of: Yeah I caught the tail end of it.
Well if what Floyd says is true and he does sincerely intend on fighting Pacquiao on Cinco De Mayo 2012, then he will be watching the Pacquiao vs. Marquez III fight Saturday.
What better view to catch the fight then ringside with all the VIPs and celebrities, right?
Floyd, whether you truly are going to fight Manny or if you are indeed scared of him, get in that ring Saturday night and shock the world.
No matter what you will redeem yourself...even if the fight with you and Pacquiao never happens.
Team Money can cut me a check this weekend when I'm there in Vegas for this genius idea and my excellent PR consultation.
