WWE Survivor Series 2011: Is Awesome Truth Ready for The Rock and John Cena?

Sharon GlencrossNov 8, 2011

As confirmed on last week’s Raw, at WWE’s upcoming Survivor Series pay-per-view, Awesome Truth (The Miz and R-Truth) will take on the team of John Cena and returning Hollywood megastar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Thanks mainly due to The Rock’s involvement and that novelty of it being his first actual wrestling match since 2004, it promises to be the biggest WWE bout in quite some time.

But despite all the promise that this program holds, some stubborn question linger in the weeks leading up to that match: Are Miz and R-Truth truly ready for The Rock and John Cena? Are they even on the same level as them?

Indeed, these questions have becoming more and more frequent lately, as the pair has been seemingly unprepared to handle John Cena and fallen to him on several occasions despite having the numbers advantage. Heck, Cena has looked so dominant many people have wondered why he even needs a tag team partner at the pay-per-view when he can clearly throw these two around all by himself.  Maybe the Rock should offer to team with Miz and R-Truth at the pay-per-view instead, since they clearly need his help way more?

For the two supposed top heels in the company to be treated in such a shoddy manner makes little or no sense and, along with other questionable creative decisions, has led many to wonder if aging owner Vince McMahon really has lost his once golden booking touch. Some may see this as harsh criticism, but considering how misguided and rash some of his decisions have been lately, it is probably fair.

And ever was McMahon’s erratic approach to booking as of late more clear than at the end of last week’s Raw, when Cena took on the Miz in a singles match as a preview to Survivor Series. In a truly astonishing piece of scripting, not only did easily shrug off outside interference from R-Truth (who was dressed in a Scream outfit, due to the show taking place on Halloween) and beat the Miz clean, he also beat up R-Truth again after the match for good measure.

It was certainly a head-scratcher of an ending: not only did it not build up the match at the pay-per-view at all; it served to completely undermine Truth and Miz and make them look weak.  Neither of them looked like anything resembling threats to superman Cena.

To make matters worse, in the week before that, Cena took on both Miz and Truth and was having no problem holding his own until Truth cheated and got the duo disqualified (which led to Cena announcing that he was going to bring in the Rock—his WrestleMania opponent—for a tag match with them at next pay-per-view event).

Did the dastardly duo get their revenge on last night’s Raw? Eh, not really. They defeated Cena and his partner Zack Ryder by nefarious means, sure, but Cena simply laughed it off after the match. The two didn’t even come close to getting their heat back.

So, is Awesome Truth ready to take on The Rock and John Cena? At this point, the answer is regrettably no. The duo simply have not been booked to be at Cena’s level. And as a direct result of this, fans can’t buy them as a dangerous main event act.

Can anything be done to correct the mistakes made with Awesome Truth in recent weeks? Well, almost certainly, the two will have to do a vicious beatdown on Cena soon, in an attempt to gain some of their heat back. Although it’s very possible it will be too late by that point and the damage will have been done. Regardless, WWE’s booking team should at least try to rectify the situation. Otherwise the biggest match at Survivor Series will turn out to be a complete dud.
