Joe Paterno: Coach Needs Football More Than Ever with Jerry Sandusky Scandal
Whether or not you believe Joe Paterno is guilty in the Jerry Sandusky scandal, one thing is clear.
For now, Paterno is clear from the law and for now, Paterno needs to concentrate on football more than ever.
The historic head coach, for now at least, appears to be safe because he told athletic director Tim Curley about the one Sandusky incident he knew of, according to the grand jury report.
Curley, of course, allegedly went on to lie to a grand jury about it, so he's not so safe.
You might think Paterno turned a blind eye or you might think he should have told the police first. If you think that you probably also believe the head coach should step down from Penn State.
If the investigation turns to find Paterno in the wrong, then yes, he should step down. But speaking strictly from the law, he still hasn't done anything that merits a conviction.
Paterno's legacy is going to take a hit no matter what during this scandal, but at this point, the only good thing for his health is for him to continue coaching.
If he steps down from his position right now, Paterno has nothing. The 84-year-old, with already bad health, will continue to wither down and end his life on a terrible note that won't represent his career in the slightest.
Strictly for his health, Paterno needs to keep working up in that press box. He needs to concentrate on football and nothing else. If he's up to it, he needs to keep his job.
Listen, I agree that Joe Paterno shouldn't be seen in the brightest light these days. He could have probably done more with the information that was given to him.
But he didn't sexually assault any boys or lie to a grand jury. We are so quick to jump on Paterno for his lack of action, but how much do we really know?
For all we actually do know, Paterno could have truly believed that what he did was enough. And hindsight is a beautiful thing. We know now how truly disgusting the acts of Sandusky allegedly were, but according to Paterno, he didn't know the vulgarity of the actions at the time.
Paterno is in a bad situation right now, yes, and there is still probably some blame on him. But to say a large part of this situation is his fault is out of control.
Now, more than ever, Joe Paterno needs to show his strength and continue coaching football. If not for anything else, he needs to do it for his health. Because that's most important.
