Big East Expansion: BYU Would Make Dollars and Sense for Big East
After it was announced that Boise State, Houston, SMU and UCF would be joining the Big East, BYU and San Diego State are now in discussions with the conference about joining the league.
BYU, despite playing against weak competition, does have a 6-3 record, including a win against Oregon State, and lost by one point to Texas.
The Cougars have shown some promise this season, and while they wouldn't be as eye-catching as the other new members, they aren't a bad team to accept into the conference. They have the ability to surprise some teams.
It's also worth noting that BYU ended the season as a Top 20 team from 2006 to 2009.
For a conference that is going to lose West Virginia, TCU, Pittsburgh and Syracuse, the Big East needs all the help it can get, and while BYU isn't a game-changer by any means, it is a wild-card program.
Air Force is reportedly undecided on whether it will leave for the Big East or remain in the MWC. If Air Force stays then San Diego State should also be considered a viable team to complete the 12-team picture in the Big East.
SDSU has fallen since former head coach Brady Hoke's departure to Michigan, but the school has exemplified the ability to bring in some big talent, including quarterback Ryan Lindley and running back Ronnie Hillman.
BYU had four straight seasons of 10 wins or more from 2006 to 2009 and the Cougars have the ability of rising again as a Top 25 team.
As celebrated as the additions of Boise State, Houston and SMU were, the Big East shouldn't sleep on BYU, either.
