Chip Mullen Video: Watch the Most Heartwarming Touchdown Run in Football History

Zachary D. RymerNov 7, 2011

You gotta love high school football. For a variety of reasons, it just feels more real than college and pro football. There's not as much hype, and that makes the game feel more grounded, more human.

To illustrate the point, I'd like you to direct your eyes to the above video. It's a clip from a South Carolina high school football playoff game between Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head, and it features a long touchdown run by a Hilton Head senior named Chip Mullen.

As far as touchdown runs go, Mullen's is nothing special.

That is, if you can look past the fact that he has Down's Syndrome. And for what it's worth, this was also the final play of the game.

In other words, it was very special.

But the cool part is not so much Mullen's run itself. The cool part is how the entire Myrtle Beach defense trailed Mullen to the end zone and then met up with him to offer their congratulations. That right there is sportsmanship at its finest.

According to WISTV.com, Mullen's run was more or less arranged by Myrtle Beach head coach Mickey Wilson. His team had the game well in hand at 64-10, so he signaled over to the Hilton Head sideline that it was time to give Mullen his shot.

If Wilson hadn't done anything, the game would have gone into the books as a blowout loss and a forgettable game for Hilton Head. Instead, it will go into the books as an all-timer.

Like I said, you gotta love it. You'll see better touchdown runs, but you'll never see one more heartwarming than this one.
